Hello! Long time lurker (years and years), first time posting...

I've searched and searched, talked to a friend that owns a cruiser shop and even had it at the dealer and no one can figure this out...

2015 Land Cruiser - started the vehicle one day and the navigation screen in the dash did not come on. That means no backup camera, no front camera, limited climate control access, no access to rear entertainment controls, and no access to vehicle settings. The climate control buttons work, but the AC will not enable blowing cold air because actually turning on the AC isn't possible without access through the screen. I'm pretty stuck since this basically makes the vehicle un-drivable (in Florida) in it's current state.

I took it into the dealership who told me it needed a new display unit, which was on back-order with no ETA on when they could get one. I did find a used unit on car-part.com for a reasonable price and swapped the units out - to no avail. The buttons still work, but no display, same as the original unit.

Of course I checked all fuses, one by one, just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Sure, I could have just gotten another dead unit (the used one I tried replacing the original one with), but knowing that's not likely, I've been searching to see if I could find another solution.

I'm totally stumped and based on searches, I seem to be the only one to ever have this issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be going on, anything I could be missing or have any suggestions on what I could try next?

I did read one post where someone mentioned corroded battery connections caused some screen glitches. I feel like my terminals look good - but I'm no mechanic...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm trying to prepare this otherwise clean LC for sale.

As I remember it, the lower section with the physical radio knobs has a large electronic element to it and.. pure speculation here.. may be important to the operation of the screen. Pretty sure it has important stuff like the hard drive and processor for navigation.

When you got the used screen, did it come with that part too? Was it available? Being the brains of the system I fear that lower part is what needs to be coded to the vehicle and VIN, but we’d need someone more experienced than I to confirm.

Also, have you tried touching the screen while it’s not working to see if you get any feedback beeps like normal operation? Plausible that the screen display and touch sensing are two different functions and one may work without the other depending on the exact failure mode.

This is what I would suspect as well. There are like 3 or 4 metal boxes all hidden behind the center dash (even on the lower sides of the center area) that all work together for the infotainment system.

Firstly, thank you so much for your help and quick response.

The unit below (that houses the CD/DVD drive and perhaps some other critical components) is a separate unit and was not included in the display I bought. I suppose I can try and find one of those used as well - perhaps I should have started with that. The dealer told me the display was the problem, though - however, not sure how they would have tested that specifically.

Honestly, I would love for everything to work perfectly, as it should. So I guess that's my next purchase to see if it solves the problem.

Thanks for the response as well!

I'm trying to find a schematic for all those components and locate a part number. The part number (or what I would think is the part number) on the top of the removed unit doesn't seem to pull any results...

I'll figure that out.

Any other guesses from anyone is also greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

And the box below it is an amplifier:

That unit says it's for a 2016 model. I've still not found the part number I'm looking for.

On the unit, it says 86130-60043 - I can find part number 86120, but not 130...

Super stinks since this is likely a part that would be affected by the dang chip shortage we're dealing with.

To be fair, most of the units you'd be buying now were probably built 5+ years ago and have been sitting on a shelf since then.

That said, I have access to a pretty thorough parts lookup system and that number doesn't come up at all.. but what does come up for a 2015 USDM LC with single screen rear seat entertainment and navigation is 86804-60380, which does show available, but unless your real name rhymes with Smeelon you will not like the price.

I added the line above about whether you get beep feedback when touching the screen after the fact as an edit.. in case you missed it. Could help give info.. or get you into AC controls.

tesla style screens replaces both upper and lower section, also the screens are plug and play, there are versions that go for as low as $400 and up to $800...i would keep this option last.

meanwhile check with your dealer if they can have a go at the one you purchased and attempt to install it? maybe that way they will not pin it on the screen itsef and will provide you with more clues to what could be wrong.

for now
1. is there any feedback or sounds when pressing anywhere on the screen?

2. do all the physical buttons on the navigation screen work?

3. is the screen turning on but is "black lit", or the screen is fully off (you need to try this in the dark)

4. did you try aircon diagnostic mode? while car is on, check this video as it can probably wake up the screen

I’ve had a similar thing happen in my 2019 a few times over the last 2 years — but mine resets after restarting the car, or if I wait approx 10-15 seconds, I get my screen back.

Is this it?

I hear that... being a 2015, it's quite likely any used unit I'm buying has been sitting for a while.

The thing I keep coming back to is what seems like a void on the internet with this issue. I can't find anything about it anywhere. Which tells me one of two things: 1.) it's being censored because it's a crazy conspiracy theory (that's probably true) or 2.) it's a very rare problem that almost no one has ever had. I tend to lean more towards the second option, but you never know! 🤣

I did see the 86804 part in my search, and it looks like the same dang thing I'm thinking of... but my name does not rhyme with Smeelon and I can't spend $9700 for that part. I'm pretty sure I've seen that very part continue to go up on price over the last few months - starting at around $1k at one point. I'd bet even for $9700 I couldn't even get my hands on one new.

I did see the bit about touching the screen. It does not seem to do anything when I touch the screen. I hear no beeps, get no feedback whatsoever.

One thing that could be interesting to note is that when I use the remote to try and turn on the single screen entertainment in the back, I get no response. This could be nothing, or it could be an indication of something... 🤷‍♂️

Nope - wish there was... it would be something. I get nothing.
2. do all the physical buttons on the navigation screen work?
There are 8 buttons below the display (Climate to recirculation) - and all of them seem to work. If flipping Toyota would have just added a dang AC button there... I'd be good! So dumb this is as reliant on the screen interface.
3. is the screen turning on but is "black lit", or the screen is fully off (you need to try this in the dark)
This is a great question and interesting thing to try - which I'll do in the dark tonight, just so I can be sure.

I did just try the aircon thing in the video shared by that Arab gentleman. It seemed to walk through the diagnostic steps, but the display never came on. Note: I tried this on both displays.

I may go the option of the "tesla style screen" if I can't get anything else to work... honestly, I just need AC - being in Florida!

I know a few people that have played with those Android screen options and no one really likes them, it seems. But it would be better than nothing, or spending $9700 for some replacement unit...

I will definitely be bringing it to another dealer to help troubleshoot if I can't find this gremlin.

I know @alwaysme mentioned the "Tesla-style screen" - honestly, it's not my first choice, but I'm willing to spend the money on one of those before I move onto more expensive parts. It may be crappy, but if I can get AC back, I'd be a happy camper.

I was going to sell this and get a minivan as a commuter - and today I did a giant facepalm and realized that was dumb - why not just keep this. Swap out the all terrains for some street tires and I'll get 18mpg like I did when we first got this thing back in '18.

Does anyone have any recommendations for full replacement units, and where to buy from (hoping not Alibaba).

Did you check for DTC codes? The FSM has quite a few related to the display. Could provide information either way if one is registered or not. Did you check the voltage on the wakeup line as detailed above? That is the first step in the troubleshooting guide, and would determine the next steps based on the answer . . .

Thank you for your response and trying to help!

I apologize for my naivety - DTC code (I had to look that up, diagnostic trouble code) - I don't have a way to pull the code. I'm sure a dealer could, but that's a bit of an adventure that I'll have to do later in the week. Is there another way I could do this myself?

The other bit about the voltage wakeup, etc... I didn't understand.

I disconnected the four connectors for the display and upon looking at them, none of them seem to match the graphic you shared. Pictured in this post - are these the connectors you're referring to? Or should I be looking for something else?

I'm sorry - it's probably frustrating for tech-minded people to try and help numbskulls like myself.

Thanks in advance!

A code reader is $20 or less at your local auto parts store. Almost all the stores will also loan you a more advanced $200 version if you ask at the counter.

None of those plugs look like the FSM plug pictured, which isn't too surprising, There are many regions and models and nav/non nav too. I'll look for one of the two white plugs pictured. I suspect it is the smaller, 10 pin, just need to figure out which pin.

You'll need a voltmeter to test voltage. These are also around $20 at your local walmart, target, hardware, or auto parts store.
