Tirechains.com is a good source and they ship quickly.

Thanks. Ash pointed them out too, And I've been trying to pull the trigger since my first snow run with the group. Just have to figure out if I can pull that off now. Just had to help the GF with some of her finacial problems :bang: and I have a couple of friends (including her's) with birthdays this month and next. Just need to see if I can pull it off.

Maybe it won't snow!:meh:

I guess we will see what happens then.

should be the inagural run of the ll80... plan right now is to drive it back after t-giving. not sure if i am more excited for my truck, to drive it again, or hope for snow... :bounce::bounce::bounce::steer:

Danise and the kids want to attend this. I think I can convince her that we "need" tire chains as an excuse to buy a set. What is the collective wisdom of the V-BAR chains? Tirechains.com indicates they are recommended (along with the 5.5mm Square Link and Heavy Duty) for off-road use. They look like they should provide even more traction than the other two types. I was thinking I'd probably get 4 of the rubber chain tensioners as well to have some extras. Even if there isn't any snow by then at least I'll have them for the once a year, maybe snow run that I do.

Anybody know of a local source for tensioners?

If/when I place an order, let me know if anyone else wants something on the same order. It might save on shipping costs if you want something small like tensioners. If I order one set of chains the S&H is $40. Two sets and it goes up to $55.

Marc,

Get the most aggressive chains you can afford. Since they're only used for wheeling and not for the roads, you can go crazy!! I added extra links with V bar into my normal tire chains just for more traction.

Good idea on splitting the shipping costs, these are heavy items.

Places like carquest or NAPA may have them but be sure to get the thicker tensioners. Thicker ones are about half inch in diameter vs the wimpy ones that are made for cars. I haven't bought any tensioners locally so I'm not a good source. All my tensioners came from Les Schwab's in Reno when I was visiting there one year. Maybe Discount Tires carry them locally?

Marc, let me know if you order chains and I'll take you up on the offer.

Marc,
I would recommend against the front chains. It's pretty tight in the front and the chains hit the A-ARM. Maybe a different style will work. THe weight of the truck, and with the rear chains, I am sure you will be fine if you just need those.

I was only planning to buy one set for the rear tires for myself. But if anyone else wants to buy a set from Tirechains.com I'm willing to share shipping costs or give them free shipping for small items that don't change my shipping costs.

Rudy and Mike should be jumping on the chain purchase/ship bandwagon....

They only charged me $19 S&H for V-bar with the spring tensioners. When I lived in Oregon and we would go play on Mt Hood (where 3' of fresh snow is a light snow day), I would just put the chains on the front of my FJ40 and it went like the clap through a dormatory.

I don't know about the 100 series/4Runner/All Track/Rav4 IFS issues, but on my 40 chains work really well on the front and I never needed them on the rear. I'd assume that they would work equally well on the 80 series and on any HD105s which happen to be coming along on the run. I know Ash uses chains on the front of his 80 without issue.... but then his is not exactly close to stock.

I have chains for the front of mine, I don't really think you need chains for the rear. If you do, I think I'll stay home and watch the news instead.

I think it was 2 years ago when I borrowed a set from Ali. I put them on the rear because of potential clearance issues around the front tires and the various IFS bits. Ideally the front is a better location, IMHO, but I have better clearance around the rear tires. I was impressed with the additional capability it gave my truck on ice and deep snow.

I might be one of those "blokes" that bug out early. Something else has come up that evening.
