Chains came today. They weigh just under 25 lbs for each tire. I suppose I should test fit them in the driveway to make sure I don't need to remove parts. Maybe there will be a slim change I need them on the tree run.

Jon, I know you won't make the tree run. I'll hang on to your bungees until the next time I see you or we can arrange a drop-off another time. I do need to make a "River of Lights" trip this year.

I haven't given up yet. We might have it resolved today.

I think it's resolved. Let me get a weekend under this person and I'll know for sure.

Nope.

Never said it was a she.

So what are the final plans/meet-up? Obviously no need for chains so I'll save the weight...

Happy to have everyone meet at our house and head up from there if that suits. We can have hot cider waiting.

That raises another question - where are we going? I was going to toss out Paliza Canyon in the Jemez as a suggestion, since we've had so much fun there over the years, and it may not be an option in the future. If I remember correctly, David was telling us that it will be closed starting in January.

For those not familiar with Paliza, we usually meet at the North Portal (east of Bernalillo) at the intersection of 550 and 528, then head up 550 to San Ysidro, take a right on Highway 4 and another right to Ponderosa. We enter Paliza at the end of the road to Ponderosa, and without too much snow (and I don't think that will be a problem this time), we can get all the way north to the Valle Grande area before coming back out to Highway 4.

It just occurred to me that some folks would need tree permits, so that might mean a couple miles of back-tracking after going to Walatowa for a permit. (I think Ponderosa is before Walatowa coming from Bernalillo?).

I'm open to suggestions - just thought I'd throw one out to get the discussion going. I'm planning to attend, and a friend with a mildly built Jeep is planning to join me. Don't worry - I will take full responsibility!

Any snow at all???? anyone been up there to find out recently?

I'm happy with paliza. I was thinking the dome, but for no other reason than that's where I've gone in the past.

We will need a permit. Would anyone be keen to get a number and bring them to save all of us backtracking?

Otherwise, we should meet up in the morning to go get them as a group so we stay together. I assume all have CBs?

If we go to Walatowa as a group for permits, I think it's only a few miles past the turn-off to Ponderosa, so it's not a big deal. Also, Walatowa would be the last chance for a real bathroom (for those who are interested ins such things), plus a chance to top off gas tanks. We could meet at the North Portal (550 & 528) and head up from there.

Ham? Crikey, that's fancy. I guess I'm in the big smoke now. Sounds like I may need to borrow one.

What time shall we meet?

The map is supposed to be available March 1, that's when most of the Forest will suddenly be off limits to all you evil, destructive motorized recreation hooligans. So take advantage of Paliza while you can.

Permits can be bought at any SFNF office, including in Santa Fe, as well as the FS Regional Office on Broadway (that location is on the down-low, but you can buy them there). Walatowa will be the easiest for most of you. $10 for a tree less than 10' tall, additional permit for the next 10'.

Josh, not sure where in Dome you went in the past, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a green tree there now.

I'll be in RR for a gymnastics meet, so have fun. We'll get our tree that afternoon or Sunday.
