CB's are still in use enough that I think it's better to have one than not especially when heading out alone. If you listen to your CB on the road you'll still hear plenty of traffic. I believe police still monitor Ch 9 in most jurisdictions too. Be sure to get your antenna tuned once you decide where you're mounting it.

Off-roaders for the most part still rely on CBs, though HAM is definitely the better option it does have more hoops to jump through to join the club (yes, it's illegal to use without a license).

Anyway, I've been using this for a few years and have been pleased with it. You can find it in expensively online.

In all seriousness. www.rightchannelradios.com

Perhaps the best site to quickly find the best for your vehicle. They even pair up radios with antennas if you want a magnet mount and semi permanent install.

Ham is the best- but unless serious over lander- mweh.

a Ham License is easy. I don't have the link at work, but there is a site you can take practice tests from the real set of questions. When you consistently get over 90% with the on-line test, find out where a local test is taking place and take it. It's cheap. I only use the Ham when traveling with a group or offroading. The difference is awesome and so is the distance you reach. I am often chatting with friends on a different trail 20 miles away in Moab. It has helped when breakdowns happen and you need parts.

I'm interested in ham... Curious which system is most common, if if both are worth having together. Obviously the more options you have, the better your chances of finding help, etc...
Curious how groups in Ouray/Moab, etc. tend to set up communications given the mixture of devices/bands, etc.

In Moab and Ouray, most of the club have HAM, but not all. In those cases we have both on. Many times when in a group the Leader and gunner can't hear each other via CB, so they tend to talk HAM. Good communications between the leader and gunner are key to a successful run, especially when you have less experienced people with you.

Once I was in town getting ready to drive up to a trail about 35 miles in the mountains, someone contact me on the HAM to ask me to pick up a part because of a breakdown. They didn't have cell coverage.

The CB comes in crackly and the HAM comes in crystal clear like a VOIP phone

It is an upgrade I strongly recommend.

Some use the HAM all the time chatting with folks as they are driving through traffic. I just use it on trips

The 2M really is all you need and that just requires a technicians license

Two is one and one is none.

Four is more... Five

All good info. Thanks. I'm going to pick up a CB of some kind either way and will also look into taking the Ham test.

I plan on hand signals

Nice pics Romer! We need to meet up for coffee sometime, we are both in Centennial!

I had to winch up P-gulch (but I was not going to give up!) after multiple attempts. It was pretty darn wet when we were there! BTU man made a couple runs at it as well I believe, not sure anyone else did.

I managed to hold up our convoy probably 45 minutes or so (sorry guys!)

Did anyone else use turn assist going down Black Bear?
I used turn assist going down black bear, worked pretty well, only thing ya gotta watch out for is sometimes it lunges a bit right when ya want it to stop! All and all it helped turn a couple of the turns from a 3 point to a 1 point. If memory serves I only used it on two of the corners, the one's that had a bit more room!

I've come to my senses and have added Ham Radio. Good advice here. A lot of info on YouTube. I'm starting with an 8w handheld pair. While in vehicle, it will be connected to an external antenna as shown and while outside a longer handheld whip. Now to get my license and learn how to use. A good site for all the parts and excellent real person support is DX Engineering.

I also changed my CB antenna to a shorty so that it is connected at all times and re-tuned it. Was able to get 1.7 SWR on 1 and 40 even with this short Firestik

Hey all. What do think about designating some scheduled time for a "show and tell" so we can learn about each other's upgrades and improvements? I really want to see a few things and also a good way to match the Cruiser with the person. Thoughts?

I love seeing what people have done to their trucks, sounds like a fun idea. We will have a 200's Cars and Coffee.

Might be a good opening night intro. Meet at same parking lot last year for a meet n greet and then head over for drinks and food?
