Anybody have a chance to look at this one?

Toyota Land Cruiser 2001

I've been looking at it heavily for a while now, if it's good I'm trading in the jeep for it.

A couple things though. he's had to replace the CV boots about 6 times in the past year. I was thinking it was because he might not have the diff drop kit with his lift. But according to the mechanic that looked at it he said it did. So I don't know. He said the angle is too steep for the cv boot and it's causing them to rub, which doesn't make sense because if he had the drop kit it wouldn't be steep right? But he said they are going to loosen the torsion bars to lower the front end to take some pressure off and see if that works, and if it does then match the back end. Thoughts?

Also, there's some slop in the drive shafts that's causing vibration at speed over 50mph, I called Cruiser Outfitters and they said usually just get new shafts or have new ones made, which is also what the mechanic that looked at the LC said also. He said he gets his driveshafts from Tom Woods.

What are your thoughts? I'd be going from a 2014 wrangler to a '01 LC, is this worth it?

Worth it : )

What about the 2003 for sale on here for $12.5K? Only thing is it's in VA.
I haven't seen it, but either way I can't swing traveling to VA for a vehicle.
And this one is already built up and he has ARB lockers and compressor for it that he hasn't installed yet. I'm just curious about some of those issues I asked about.

I've been to see it twice and it depends on what you want. It's definitely a bit of a project. Needs TBelt/WP, valve cover gasket, and a new radiator (cracked and leaking). The service history is iffy and has some choice comments at one service regarding the colors of various fluids. The guy got it from his dad who I think installed most of the accessories. I had him down to $12,5 from his original super high number (can't remember exactly).

There are aftermarket electrical issues. Tech notes from Toyota show some issues with how the IPF's were wired. There are three different aftermarket alarm systems installed, apparently each installed to replace one that failed. Stereo is pretty nice though it has a blown speaker.

"Some vibration" would be an understatement in my book with regards to the u-joints. Anything over 55 is uncomfortable.

All of that said, it's not bad but would take some wrenching to be a DD. If you're handy and got him to $10-11K I'd go for it. It looks bada** but my wife would kill me if I brought home a project right now.

I'm glad someone else looked at it. Everything you were talking about I definitely saw. He said the Tbelt was replaced at 150k but there are no records on the Toyota service website. I saw the radiator was cracked and leaking and he was playing that off like it wasn't a big deal. I told him his IPF lights didn't turn on with the switch but I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it because all the wiring looked fine (I'm not an electrical guru by any means though.) and I asked the mechanic that looked at it and he didn't know. But yes, I agree, "vibration" is a bit of an understatement, it was bearable, but definitely not as a DD, which it would be. If it didn't have any problems it would be a fantastic deal. But he was also really pushy, I kept trying to get him to let me take it to either Rick at Alamo Auto Doctors in San Antonio or Land Cruiser Specialist in Austin, but he kept saying it's an as-is deal, 12,500 for all of it. And I finally just told him today that I'm going to pass. As a buyer, I NEED to know what's wrong with it before I buy it, it's kinda sorta a big deal.

So I'm stuck with the jeep still. Which is not a bad vehicle. I've grown up with Jeeps all my life, but recently I have been convinced of the capability and durability of LCs from a buddy who owns 3 of them.

So I am definitely still in the market for one. But I see what look like really good ones in the Houston area, but I can't justify traveling that far to look at a vehicle (I live in San Marcos).

Agree with all of the above. He used some really basic and overt sales tactics too and overall made it seem like he was doing me a favor selling it to me. Plus all the BS about how much the accessories cost when he didn't even pay for them kinda bugged me. The overall vibe I got was that he wants out of the truck and for it to be someone else's problem.

I'm certain you would have found other stuff wrong with it had you pulled the trigger. Without a solid inspection at a shop it would have been a ball of yarn.

You'll find the right one eventually. There's a lot of garbage floating around on used lots and the salespeople seem to have found this site and have deluded themselves into insane markups for trucks that need work.

I went and looked at a '04 LC up near Austin at a used luxury car dealership. They originally had it priced at $18,5k. Then they dropped it to $16.5k. By the time I saw it on the website was it was $14.5k and they said that was because it needed new tires and brakes an rotors and they said that was fairly priced and I told him hell no. I called LC Specialist in Austin and he said they looked at the truck a week ago and racked up a list of $8,000 that needed to be done on it.

Anyways, I was just kind of adding to your point that dealerships are marking LCs up at a ridiculous price for what they have.

I appreciate the input, and if anyone finds a good LC that needs a home, I'm looking for one.
