My first 100. Had it three weeks And noticed à knocking sound when going over bumps. I can hear it And feel it through The peddels. Sounds/feels like something is loose. I crawled under but did not see anything obvious. How do i best diagnose? Don't want to wait until it gets worse

Thanks!

very common on 98-02 to have the steering rack bushing on the PS be shot. Jack up front end, grab tires at 9 and 3, and push in/out. You can usually see the slop in the rack. Easy/cheap fix. Could also be about a million other things, loose shock top nut, fubar'd ASB, etc. etc. :meh:

First things first. Have somebody jump up and down on the front end while you move around and check items. First things that come to mind that pop, and cycle with the suspension is sway bar links (on the control arm), and shock mount bolts. I had a horrific bang upfront when turning into drives and speed bumps, it turned out to be the sway bar mount.

Thanks guys! I have à neighbor kid that should find this fun. Who doesn't like to jump up And down on things. Back with more later

Interesting... I had new shocks put in and have had a similar knocking sound. I'm going to have someone check out my shock mount bolts!

I'm having this same problem now also... thought it was my trailer hitch. gonna check out what was suggested above. Thanks for the post.

I think I found it....my CV (axle) coming into the PS wheel is loose. I can grab it and move it with a little force. I can't the other side...I will start searching threads to see what's next.

Is is sliding in/out of the hub? If so your snap ring has come off and you're very close to having a disabled rig and $400 parts in repair. Pop the plastic wheel cover then the tin cap over the hub and see if the ring is still on. Post up pics if you're unsure what you're looking at.

If it's been like this for a while and has damaged the groove on the cv shaft rig you may need a new cv. Hopefully not.

If it doesn't slide in/out from the hub it's something else.

OregonLC - I will try this when I get home tonight. How do you remove second "tin" cover? Do you have to unbolt the assembly it's attached to or does it pry off? Sorry never worked on front end before. Thanks!

It just pops off. I use an old chisel to get it started. Bad pic, but I run without plastic covers. You can see the gold to cap I the center. Don't have any on the phone with it removed, but when you pull the cap there should be a snap ring on the cv shaft. But again, only go to this effort if the hub end of the cv is sliding in/out if the hub. image-741416217.webp

Thanks OregonLC. I am out on sales calls so I thought I would post this pic until I can get home and dig in a bit more......this doesn't look right..CV/boot as it's going into the backside of wheel.

Yep, your snap ring is off. If I were you I'd swing into the nearest Toyota dealer and see if they have a ring they can put on, assuming the splines aren't damaged. If so, you're looking at a new CV and drive flange. The rings come in various thicknesses from 1.6mm to 2.8mm (or thereabouts) so you can't just pick one up without knowing what size fits your truck. Depending upon how long it's been like that a bearing repack would be in order also.

If it comes all the way out away from the splines the vehicle will act like it is in neutral. Press the center lock button and you'll regain rear wheel drive.

Your clip is off/missing.

Assuming my splines are still good is this an easy fix? If new CV and drive flange is needed what is your guess on cost to replace?

Thanks again for the quick diagnosis!!!!

If your truck hasn't made a grinding sound or loss of power I would say your splines are fine. When you push the axle back in and install the c-clip you can see the outer splines.

This is what I see after removing grease cap....I have tried grabbing the axle/boot from the backside but it won't budge forward only slight movement up and down....? how to I get the shaft further in to a place where I press the snapring on? I am just trying to get it to a place where I feel good about driving it to dealership for front knuckle service.....Thanks!!!

Yep, so if you slide the CV back toward you, what do the splines and groove look like? If they're not rounded then you just need to put on a new clip. They're not re-useable and are sized to the specific vehicle.

May be obvious, but if not, you need to have that tire in the air in order to get the axle out far enough. You can thread a 12mm bolt into the end of the axle to assist with pulling if you need to. I reuse my c-clips, never had an issue after many axle rebuilds. But, if yours is popping off, there could be another reason.
