....so I just noticed that DDM sells a 7" Sealed Conversion housing that can be used w/ their HID kits.

I searched the FJ40 forum and got pretty much crickets other than LandCruiserPhil suggesting them. I'll start a thread there on the topic, but thought I'd ask here as well since many of your who installed the DDM kits last spring also own older rigs.

I love the idea of having some bright light in my 40. I'd likely just run the 35w full time and abandon the HI beams since I've grown accustomed to driving around by candlelight.

What sayeth the MUDticians?

not bad for the money, I think I might order 4 of these housings and get some serious light going again...

Are these essentially foglamp housings but with the upgrade of HID? Like the IPF/Hella/KC/Procomp out there?

They don't appear to be weathertight and intended to be mounted out on the front of a bar or up on a rack if that's what you mean.

Here's a pic:

There's an enlarged version of the same pic here.

I'm assuming that regardless of whether I go HIR or HID for the bulbs, I'll need at least the relay if not a whole new wiring kit.

Would there be any issue using these as a replacement for the ancient oem sealed units I have now? Cost-wise, these would be about a wash w/ the Roundeyes or Autoloc Snakeyes for HIR or w/ the DDM 35w HID kit.

....I really need to take this over to the FJ40 forum

I installed an H4 HID kit for a rav4 earlier with hi/lo combo, my only issue about using those housings (which have h4's) is that the H4 has an extra plug for the hi/lo, how would this be worked into the hundy? I installed a hi/lo harness, it too has the extra plug aside from the usual two found on a normal HID conversion

2. What are you guys doing w/ the small light (T10 bulbs?) between the main headlights and the turn signals? Switching them to white LEDs? Disabling them by snipping the wire or simply removing the bulbs?

I installed 194 PIAA LED bulbs into these locations. They have been the longest running LEDs I've ever owned (first ones ever on the truck).

I've recently switched to V-leds high power 194 LEDs w/ heat sinks because they can get scalding hot, but are/have been great in the headlights and for license plates.

here's a pic of them:

Just installed the DDM tuning 55W 6000k HID kit in my 99 LX470. I've been running it without the additional relay harness w/o any issues whatsoever. But I wired the kit the way I wanted it (possibly similar to the creator of this thread...2000UZJ) The bulb was a tight squeeze into the headlight housing, but it fit. The bulb sits in there clocked differently than the standard halogen bulb, but it doesn't seem affect the beam coming out of the projector in anyway and there is a nice beam cutoff.

Below are some pics of the install, I basically chopped the bulb harness in the kit and soldered it directly to the factory connector for the low beam headlight that is attached the rear cover of the headlight housing. Photos are worth a 1000 words so here they are with some commentary to explain.

Cut the 2 wires that go from the bulb harness to the ballast

The headlight housing bulb access cover/wiring. Cut the connector off.

Strip insulation and prepare to solder together (use the skills you learned from playing with R/C cars)

Soldered with heat shrink tubing in place
IMG_1091.jpg

You won't need these wires, cut them off.
IMG_1088.jpg

Drill with 1" hole bit, don't need a high speed drill
IMG_1081.jpg

Secure headlight housing bulb access cover, drill at slow speed to cut a 1" diameter hole (the HID bulb grommet is about 1" outer diameter on the DDM kit, other kits may have different diameter grommets)
IMG_1085.jpg

Drilling complete, take your time drilling. The plastic part cannot be clamped down hard (just snug), rushing this can cause the part to rip out of the vise.

HID bulb harness with excess wiring trimmed away
The 2 factory wires (green and black) won't be used, I left them there just in case I need to put it back to stock.

LH side all wired up. Ballast mounted with double sided tape, good ole zip ties hold everything else in place so nothing gets caught when installing the battery.

55w 6000k low beams installed
35w 3000k fogs (soon to be installed)

Installed my DDM HID kit today, nothing to it.

Got the 55w, 4500k for the lows, and the 35w, 4500k for the fogs. Everything fired up the first time, no problem. WAY better than factory brightness.

I ordered the wiring harness, but after they fired up, wound up not using it. After going back and reading a little more in this thread, think i'll be putting it in line tomorrow...

Hello Mudmates,

I used a harness for my 55W low beams but didn't end up using a harness for my 35W fogs. If someone needs a harness, I have one that i will sell for $12 shipped.

Let me know

Thanks

TLC Dan

I just installed my 35W 5000k kit thanks to the advice on this thread! Only small issue I ran into was the polarity reversal, but once I plugged the ballast in upside down it all went to work. Thanks again guys!

Toyota made the high beam in the LX470 HID.......

High beams are used for flashing, and rapid on/off power to HID's will kill the ballasts. Remember that HID's have a warm up period, so they won't work for flashing since there is no instant on.

Since those going HID will never need hi beams, except for when flashing people, just put LEDs in the high beam location, should be BRIGHT lol

Won't work.
I've got LEDs in my DRLs, which are the high beams, and the "brights" with LEDs are minimal to none. Definitely not worth it unless used purely for aesthetics.

Just FYI, there is another option other than runnning a relay if you need more amperage to fire up the balasts. I skipped the relay. Each headlight bulb is fused individually in the fuse box right by the battery (may be different on the later MY, my 100 is a 98). I made a new harness and used fuse clips to wire directly to the fused side of each bulb fuse in the fuse box, and ran a common ground for the negative side of each HID. It provides 10amps at startup (according to my amp clamp) and gives you a factory fuseable power source for both of the HID's

If any of you have problems with your HIDs firing up, this is a viable option around a relay and inline fuse.

If you guys are interested I'll take some photos.

get the 9006 55w 6k kit(bright white)..stay away from the slim ballast kit...slim ballast will not work with automatic lights..if you get a kit for the fogs, get the 35w 4.5k kit, it matches the 55w 6k kit perfectly

HID Kits, BMW Aftermarket Bumpers & Lighting, DEPO - DDM Tuning

get the mounting brackets from ebay, they are $1.79 each..I have the link for that if you need it

Light shade preferences aside, I am assuming these are both light years better than the ones in the truck? My 97 FZJ80 has much better lights.

I really want an HID light bar...I have about 5 miles or rural roads every night but I am not getting a winch bumper or roof rack soon.

I would actually rather have HID's on my high beams than low personally.

Thinking HIDs in the fogs and brights.....crazy??

Thinking HIDs in the fogs and brights.....crazy??

Dont do HIDs in the brights...just do the fogs and lows in HID, I guarantee that the light will be 100000X better

Do LED in the DRLs

1st picture: HIDs in the lows, not yet installed in the fogs
2nd picture: HIDs in both lows and fogs

lows: 55w 9006 6k
fogs: 35w 9006 4.5k

doesnt look blue to me:D
