Thought I'd share this jus in case someone was looking for another possible location to mount a ballast. Its one of the locations where the headlight bolts to the body. Is it safe to mount two ballasts back to back? Jus wondering. Also, are there cheaper sources for HID bulbs that are reliable? Paying for cheap bulbs ($12.50) and then $12 to ship bulbs from ddm is jus way too expensive imo

Yeah what a rip off! Like that guying selling the TRD emblems, instead of a discount he increases the price when you buy quantity!

That's funny :D

Having just redone all my lights up front, I second PMan's earlier post.

LX:
Low Beam: H1
High Beam: 9005
Fog Light: H3

I just placed my order w/ DDM today. They say the new slim ballast's have one mounting hole. I not sure if this is news but welcome none the less. 55W 4500's for the lows and 35W 4500's for the fogs. Both with harnesses.

Cant wait...........

I also can not wait, ordered mine over the weekend from DDM. Got 55W 6000k for lows and 35W 6000k for fogs, also both with harnesses. I cant wait to see what the 55W ones look like........:)

I have 35W 6000K on my FJ and they are pretty awesome already.

Was looking at my headlight housings today.....just wondering how many of you adjusted your lights after installing HID kits??? Or was it not necessary???

Are they separate adjusters for the lows and the highs, or just one for the whole housing???

Thanks for any and all help, looking at installing mine this weekend.

You may need to depends on your vehicle....I think my left side is aimed higher than the right

I never touched my alignment. Never been flashed.

On the other hand, my "5K" bulbs somehow turned purple. First time I walked infront of the 100 in a few weeks while running. Not sure how. But the bulbs will be replaced with 4500's or 4K. I hope you guys with 5K don't have gay rainbow colored headlights

yea...I still love my hid's

I have had 6000Ks on my FJ for about 2 years. They are pretty much just pure white with just a hint of blue when you look at the headlight. But on the road it looks bright white. They are only a 35watt kit, and the visibility with them is amazing. Cant wait to get home today, my new 55watt kit for the 100 should be there. :)

HID Install ?

Hello Mudmates,

I need a suggestion on where to put the ballast's for my fog lights. I installed the ones for the low beams ( not that impressed w/the light output but....)but want to know where other people put the ones for the fogs.

TIA

UZJ100 with 55W HID Kits - Relay Harness Recommended or Required?

MUDsters,

I ordered a 55W HID kit from DDM Tuning, should I be running the HID kit wiring harness? (application: 99 LX470)
Can you guys with 55w kit experience chime in? I just placed my order with DDM, but can probably still add in the harness if I contact them in time. I searched and read various informative threads here on HID installs and couldn't nail down the exact info..

My prior experience with HID kits on other vehicles has only been with the 35w kits, so I'd like to know if I need the harness before I let the smoke out of the factory electrical..

Also, for the factory fog lights, I went with a 55W 3000k kit? Is this overkill?? (flame suit strapped on):meh:

I'd say recommended. Some people say it is not required but $12.50 for piece of mind is not a big price to pay

yea..you're right, it's definitely worth it at 12 bucks for the peace of mind.
I guess I just didn't want to add more wiring than needed and keep it as simple as possible.

I will probably just go with the harness kit, don't want to risk frying any electrical.

Thanks for the input.

I know it's recommended, but I concluded for myself that the current draws, even at startu, should be a non issue even without the harness. been running with no problems since last winter.

I agree, start up current on the DDM ballast is a non issue and performed per stated on the ballast.

The only thing I have personally experienced with not running the relay harness is that sometimes one of your lights may not fire up. This has happened on my FJ even with only running the 35watt kit. When this does happen, only one of the sides fire up.

The first time it happened to me I only had the kit for about a month, and I was thinking…..great one of my bulbs is bad already??? But it fired back up after turning them off and back on again. In the beginning it happened to the same side a few times so then I was looking into the wiring seeing if something was wrong with that one side. But after more time passed it has been totally random as to which side fires up and which side doesn’t. This issues may only happen like one time a week or once every other week, but now I just watch for it.
Turns out after much research the HIDs are not getting enough to start up both sides, even though the kit is a 35 watt digital slim kit. I still have not added the relay harness to my FJ to makes sure that this is 100% the problem, but it seems to be the consensus and it makes sense to me.

I also just purchased a 55watt kit for my lows on my 99 TLC, I also picked up a 35watt kit for my fogs. I ordered the relay harness with both of them just to try it out, and also it was recommended when running multiple kits. I went with the 35 watt on the fogs because it was recommend on DDMs site for smaller housings and fog lights to run the 35 watts because of less heat. I was also thinking this because the lenses are plastic unlike the glass headlights.

Also on another note, the 35watt kit on my FJ is pretty freaking bright by itself already. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like with 55watt lows and 35watt fogs on at the same time.

I have that problem even with the relay. But after taking the settings off of the auto turn on and off, I havent had problems with the ballasts firing up.

I just ordered a 35w 4500k HID kit for my fogs, I heard the 55w is not recommended for small plastic foglight housings. I was going to take the risk and just order 55w but Im not one to risk breaking/damaging parts.
