$400 install cost looking pretty cheap if they did all that correctly..and makes the 100 look like child's play.
 
According to the manual in order to remove the cowling you have to also remove the radiator support seal and the fender seals first but you actually don't have to remove either. There is a small clip on the cowling that sits under the fender seals but you can access that clip just by pulling back the fender seals a bit without actually removing them. So I suspect many of the steps listed can be skipped or abbreviated so it's probably not quite as involved as the manual makes it out to be.
 
Well I need a windshield, finally. I was dreading this day really...

Now to re-read everything and not get wrapped up in it, as it's a windshield.

Good question though. Reading the service manual makes it look like rocket science to replace the windshield. I wonder if it's really that involved or if it's not as complicated as it looks.
 
Had a Pilk installed last summer. Watched the whole thing. It's an easy job. There's no rocket science whatsoever. My only complaint is that the front deicer coil doesn't seem to be as effective as OEM. It heats, just not as quickly or as thoroughly.

I was pheasant hunting this past weekend. The truck in front of me shot a rock from the road like an ICBM straight at my front windshield. BAM! Small spider impact and one line crack going at a 2:00 o'clock angle.

I called my insurance and they have a windshield program with Safelight. Repair is free if smaller than a $1.00 bill, bigger than that and it has to be replaced and a $200.00 deductible. Impact zone and crack are right at the size of a dollar bill when taken together.

Any experience with this type of repair on a 200's window?

Assuming it can't repaired and has to be replaced, it appears OEM glass is not necessary as all glass is manufactured to OEM specs anyway, so its fungible right?
 
Got a Pilk. no real complaints. can't tell any difference. Make sure they replace the side trim and not reuse the old ones.

Careful with Safelight. I've had two windshields replaced by them in other vehicles and both leaked within a month. Water coming inside during rain. I called to tell them about it and they responded before they even pulled up my account. Rust/faulty old OEM trim. Now the one was less than a year old... They did both jobs "on the street". They came to where I work and fixed it. I talked to my mechanic about it and he said never do that. Make sure you bring it into their shop or just take it to the dealer. Check your state laws. If they require insurance companies to replace windshields you can take it anywhere. Varies state to state. Also check your policy. If there is no state law and you have a deductable you still can take it anywhere and just pay the deductible. You might have to fight them but it's a law. They make deals with Safelight because it is cheaper for them.
 
Hello to all LC members, my fist post here.
18Cruiser... I would stay clear of Safelight at all costs, unless you're leasing your LC and don't care how the replacement windshield is installed.
When my windshield broke, I was referred to Safelight by my insurance even offered OEM glass @ no out of pocket cost.
First install replacement leaked.
Two weeks later had to take my LC back to their shop for a reinstall only to discover installer damaged the windshield cowl.

Needless to say had to find a welder .

Week later once the repairs were complete after picking up my LC from Safelight, immediately noticed wind buffeting at hwy speeds due to damaged moldings and broken retainer clips which they didn't bother to replace.
So hope my horrid experience sways you away from these butchers.
 
I can second on Safelite, though not with a 200. My exes 4Runner needed a new windshield, went to Safelite and had to go back 3 times because of wind noise/air leaks. It eventually got fixed but it was a PIA to keep going back to their shop.

Nice Pepsi!! Own a Deep Blue SD myself.

Echo sentiments of Safelite being completely incompetent. Caused $3,000 work of damage/bodywork to my 4Runner due to a port install that cause entire frame to rust.

If its a chip it works great before it cracks and spreads. If there is a small crack spreading take it to a professional. Those are impossible to fix correctly with the DIY kits. MagniBond or similar product. The longer you wait the more the crack will spread.
 
Lived in Colorado for a LONG time, have been through MANY windshields.

If you're not paying and they'll get you OEM, OEM is best.

I've had Pilk and FUYAO on my 4Runner and 200 series and FU tends to pit easier and isn't as clear or free of imperfections compared to Pilk. If you demand OEM, your insurance premiums may go up more, but if you're replacing a 400-800 dollar windshield every 8-10 months, slightly higher premiums are still worth it.

Stuff like the heater worked for both aftermarket brands, btw.

I'd also like to add that CO windshield installers know what they're doing for the most part and are familiar with many different makes and models, not sure about other states where windshields aren't replaced so often.

If it's just a repair (not a replacement), then it's more reasonable to go with Safelite if it's convenient, since for a chip repair they will only touch the surface of the glass and not any molding, etc. I had two chips repaired this past month, and Safelite did a fine job with the repair (not replacements). That being said, I think Safelite's repair was definitely more visible than chip repairs I've had done elsewhere. I've never had a chip repair "go bad", and will always choose a repair over a full windshield replacement if I can (to avoid the horror stories described above).
 
Safelite came out and said that the crack is to large to repair and the windshield has to be replaced. They offered to schedule a replacement, I declined.

I sent a message to Binswanger Glass to get an estimate for replacement. Below is the reply, which I have colored for easier reading:

Seems odd that they are saying that not available as an aftermarket part and OEM is required, at least based on the thread above. By the way, here is their estimate below:
