Are there any strong opinions on replacing a windshield on a 2015 Land Cruiser with Pilkington glass versus OEM windshield which I can buy through the dealership? With online discount, can get Toyota OEM for $635, then have installed locally. Pilkington is about $450 installed. Any advice from anyone? Is the $200 - $250 delta worth the money?

The glass is manufactured to spec. Mine was replaced a year ago with Pilkington and I've seen no ill effects. Except I saved $1100, glass was listed from the dealer at $1200 and they wanted $299 to install. I paid $400 for the glass and install. The one thing they missed during the install was the rain sensor tape. I had to take care of that after I diagnosed the issue.

I had mine replaced at Richardson Auto Glass near Ft. Worth, Texas about a year ago. The dealer told me that they typically outsource windshields to this company, so I just went direct. We paid a $50 deductible (windshield option on policy). Good service and no issues.

Only downside is that I need to get another one done. I drive quite a bit, and the two primary highways around me have a slew of rock truck traffic. Windshield damage is inevitable...

Is there any IR coating on newer windshields? I feel like I'm getting a deep tan in my 2009.

Thanks for the response guys. Will wait for a few more responses, then let you know what direction I go.

By the way, don't tell the guys on the 60/62 page I have a newer model Cruiser as well...;)

I will say that while I would never pay $1200 for a windshield... the OEM is some serious *quality* glass. I have a small crack from a very substantial rock strike...but after a year, it has not grown even a little. On any other windshield I've driven with over the years, cracks like this would have grown by now. I'd be interested in replacing it if I knew it was of similar quality...but at this point, I'm so impressed with the resistance to crack "growth" that I'm leaving it alone for now.

As a guy who always leans to OEM, glass is sure not one of them.

All automotive glass in manufactured by only a couple companies in the whole world. Toyota does not make their own glass, and the manufactures just put on a Toyota or Ford or GM or whatever symbol on the corner for.

So please, don't waste your money on a Toyota symbol.

If you want to know who made your glass that was in the truck when it was new it is probably Carlite, Fuyao, Mygrant Glass, PGW – Pittsburgh Glass Works, or Pilkington

Does the 200 have acoustic lamination? I read that the 200 also has thicker glass than normal Toyotas. Do aftermarket glass have the same specs?

A 200 does have thicker glass than other vehicles, along with an acustic lamination and some versions for with and without rain sensing wipers and heated wiper blades.

But with glass they are OEE original equipment equivalent, and made the same across the board.

I did know so much about glass till my friend that owns a body shop who helped me line-X'ed my 200 told me. He got the specs for OEM and OEE glass and every dimension and feature was the same for the companies that I mention in my last port.

Unfortunately in CO we get a lot of rocks in winter. I've replaced it twice, essentially every spring I get a new one. $100 deductible with insurance and always get oem. Even though they tell me aftermarket is the same I just prefer oem.

On the 200, is the a-pillar trim fastened with rivets like it is on the 100 series? If yes, I'd be more concerned with finding a quality installer who is familiar with Land Cruisers.

Ya, I've never bought an OEM windshield. I just want to figure out who made this one. Anyone know for sure who they sourced for 2008?

It will say on the etched symbol on the glass, my '11 front windows are Nippon, and all other is AGC automotive and my front is a replacement Pilkington.

But even then the company names don't mean much as they make different brands on the same factory flood. Like with batteries, die hard platinums and Odysseys are the same with different labels.

Any idea which company made the glass in my '13?

AGC, they are based in Brussels. They make glass for anything you can think off. Cars to cruise ships but mostly commercial building.

See for the factory, they will just add that Toyota at the top, or Nissan, or BMW for the buyer who is obviously buying in bulk.

Got it! Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Went with Pilkington. Used Carriage Glass in Houston - great shop - very clean and professional. $420 in and out. Pilkington has a distribution center in Houston, so they were able to get me finished with same day service. Merry Christmas to all!

Is there a visible way to determine if the windshield has the heating element in it? I tried mine this afternoon and was not able to feel any heat after only 3 min. Perhaps that is not long enough? I will remove the shroud tomorrow to inspect wiring.

^^^ moldings, rivets, the whole bit? I haven't replaced a windshield yet on the 200 but the 100 is a hack job, if the installer isn't worth their weight, cuts corners etc. Anyone have the Toyota schematic on what's actually required and the step by step? Moldings, rivets, the particular adhesive required etc?
