Having grown up before seat belts and airbags were required, I remember when it was common for some accident victims to exit the vehicle through the windshield. Since at least the 60's windshields were safety glass and were designed to either pop out completely or break into small pieces. I would think that the windshield protection film would keep the glass from breaking as designed. I suppose if everyone is tied into their vehicles as is now required, flying through the front windshield may be a thing of the past but I would think that it is still possible for unbelted passengers to fly around in case of head on collisions.

Unintended consequence possibility for sure 👆🏻

The 200 series windshield and so are most other vehicles these days are laminated glass. The extra protection film does not change its behaviour much nor have i ever heard the logic presented for modern cars. Seems keeping the driver and passengers in the vehicle is priority in any case.

Now the experience I have with this type film on my 535d is mixed…

Positives
- It worked on a couple occasions on I10 when I otherwise would have had damage
- Has potential of reducing the number of times your windshield gets replaced removing sensors, cowling etc.

Negatives
- Price - It was in 2018 (no doubt more now) another $225 on top of the Pilkington replacement windshield of $550
- Rain - Windshield wiper use scratches the film sooner than later. So I frequently clayed the wipers (works, keeps them smooth,) and kept the windshield very clean. All in all a real “OCD treat…”
- Despite care I removed it after around 25000 miles and was amazed how much clearer the view was

Be nice they make a better windshield which is capable of handling rocks better (could they? Maybe) or you get good at self installs to replace it frequently, say every 20k miles.

All in all I have tried it once and am off it for now.
