I was wondering if there are any fans/supporters of the 2 LT diesel?

Does anyone have anything good to say about the 2 LT?

I am looking at a 1986 LJ70 with the 2 LT, but all here is how bad the engine is. Not sure if I should persue it or not?

Feedback please?!

I am a fan of not owning one....
I hear their good until they go. Then they are a complete headache.
Save yourself the money and get a BJ7* or a HZJ7* they are great trucks with tough engines.

I think you will find that the 2Lt fan club can hold their monthly meetings in a phone booth and have some room to spare.
....good luck......1978HJ45

I think one of the site moderators should find a good 2LTE yah or nay thread and make it a sticky! and put this subject to bed....Though this discussion always makes for some edgy reading:hillbilly:

I think 10 minutes with the search feature should give you all the feedback you need.

I thought the membership list could fit on a postage stamp.

Im a fan of 2LT's being turned into anything except back in a toyota 4x4. I think they use the old engines to resmelt and make CHERRY cars from CHina.

OK I'm in :D

Regarding the JDM 2LTE, I have nothing good to say, not having any first hand experience with them.

As far as the 2L/2LT/2L2/2LT2 non-E, non-JDM engines go :
They have a proven track record of reliability if the cooling system is kept in good shape. Life expectancy of the cylinder head in normal european conditions seems to be averaging ~200,000.
Some have blown heads at 120,000 and some original heads still running strong at 360,000+, depending upon exceptionnal driver abuse or careness ?
That said it is probably not a good highway or towing engine from lack of power, although it has been used successfully for offroad racing in the past.
Fuel economy is not excellent but since this engine is smooth and torque is not bad, as well as being super easy to work on, parts are cheap... its the perfect engine for driving around the bush as a cheap beater :D
And yes I've seen my share of cracked heads, spun bearings and whatnot :wrench:

:flipoff2:

Not having many 2LT or 2LT E in OZ ,I dont have too much 1st hand experience with them. However the 2L , 3L,5L were sold in big numbers here and have proven themselves to be reliable.
Very popular in the Hilux 2wd and Hiace delivery vans.

M Thompson,
I own a 1989 LJ70 since April last year, have
wheeled more than 5 times with it in Malaysian
rainforest and travelled up north (400km=250miles
range) a couple of times running at constant
speeds of (100-110)km/hr or (62-68)mph.

Of course continuous monitoring on both,
>> temp gauge (runs below QTR mark and at times
just below half way mark on long stretch of hill
climbs), and
>> turbo booze at 0.7atm (10.2psi) max.
...... for all the warnings noted from previous 2L/2LT/2LTE
owner experiences in this forum...

I would say, am happy with the LJ70 performances to date
on both ONroad and OFFroad.

Do agree with denis's response on fuel consumption above
ie. average (6.9-7.5)km/ltr city driving .....
long distances averages at 8km/ltr...
as compared to my 1999 Ranger XLT (2.5L Turbo)....

Head cracked/etc... hope will NOT see/experience them.

On engine age, per meter it had done 597,149km BUT
did note a complete overhaul was done retrofitting a TE
during pick-up in April'09. The original is a 2L with
compression ratio of 22:1 and with the turbo from
TE series, I understand why the turbo was set max
at 0.7atm... original 2LT series per specs were running
with 20:1 compression ratio.

Hopefully my short experience gives you some input on 2L
fitted with TE turbo ...

regards,
helimanBD.

I've owned a 2LT in a LJ70 for the last 10 years or so. Almost 300,000 on the engine and I haven't done any work on the internals. As far as i know it's had no major work done to it.

It's intercooled and boosts to around 15psi and drives reasonably well at speeds up to 100km/h.

Not a lot of power on hills, but quite ok offroad and at lower speeds.

I have another LJ70 with a 5L toyota motor (3l NA diesel) and the 2lt is nicer to drive.

I'm a fan, but more for notstalgia type reasons.

i owned a 89 hilux surf before i could afford my bj 74, the surf had a 2lt in and when i bought it i didnt know anything about, i thought to myself " its toyota diesel, of course its going to be great", oh how i was wrong. i owned it for about 2 year before i had to cut my losses. itwas easily the worst financial decision ive ever made with a vehicle. but on the upside , my bj74 has made up for it with its 13bt. ownd it 2.5 years now and no problems yet...

2l

I had a hilux with a 2l for 9 years, got it at 100.000k sold last year with 384000k, oil change every 5000 new injectores at 200000k. timing belts and water pump every 100000k. and they have roller rockers. My son has a one now. The onley thing he hasnt broken is the 2l

I just picked up an 88 LJ73 for 2500 Euro... quite happy with it, gutless, has a few minor issues, but its a decent little commuter... I will say though, I dont plan to bring it back to Canada with me when I leave here. Will look for a BJ74 instead.

While I am sure that any diesel engine can shed parts on any given day the key to longevity on the 2L-TE in the LJ78 may be as simple as recognizing that the vehicle is heavy and the engine is underpowered for the weight. If you continue to make up for this deficiency by staying in the throttle ( and the turbo ) you are probably setting yourself up for a frustrating ownership experience. This small engine / heavy vehicle combination also equates to relatively poor fuel economy. However recognizing these shortcomings and operating the LJ78 accordingly will probably suit your needs for a fairly large and comfortable people mover. ...........1978Hj45
