I thought maybe this is a good comparison, different series of Cruisers (80 vs 75/78) and FT vs FTE.

Here is a Troopy with FTE swap (wide nose) on 80-series chassis. Yes, fully custom but that’s my point here. We set this engine bay up for this specific build, it’s so much cleaner for a number of reasons from being a manual trans to us building the IC plumbing to being 12v and so forth.

Lots of room for maintenance, lots of room for additional equipment and accessories. 👍

Here is same pics of the HDJ81. It being 24v starting system, full trim, auto trans, obviously a PDI intercooler and trans cooler added. I also deleted the ACSD so there was more in here when I started.

It’s pretty full now as is with only an intercooler added and the catch can.

This too, while I need to trim down some of the vac hoses still, to me it is kind of a “Toyota wtf” moment. It’s actually worse with EGR but come on, run absolutely everything on this side!!??

Makes it a pretty big pita to get the starter out or change the oil pressure gauge, even the oil filter. Oil cooler!? Massive job, massive! From what I have seen it’s worse on the top trim FT EGR 24v HDJ81’s. Can certainly be converted to 12v and a manual trans sure simplifies things!

Don’t get me wrong, I love the FT and the 81’s. I think from a service standpoint though a top trim auto FT in RHD, 24v with say an intercooler added is not the easiest to maintain.

With no trans cooler lines, no ABS, no EGR, no 24v the engine bay can be vastly improved upon and clutter free. That’s my only point here.

Troopy FTE same location I am complaining about on the 81. 😐

These oil coolers with “catch cup” sure help keep it clean during oil changes. All previous series of 1HDx didn’t have this and oil filter oil runs down the block, every change. Not as easy as the GM v8 starters but far easier than the 81 pictured above.

Agreed. I want to add a Webasto and a SwitchPro mount but I just have no room in my engine bay. I'm excited to be getting rid of my trans cooler and lines but will keep ABS for now.

I think when the time comes in the next year or two to rebuild the IP, get a new turbo, do a proper ACSD delete with the right oil cover cooler etc. and do an engine reseal/refresh, I'm just going to pull the engine. Don't want to do it in the engine bay

Ya, this FT while non EGR did have a BACS and SICS as well as the ACSD. All deleted which has cleaned up the LHS engine bay pictured above. I think I can also delete the HAC as it seems to serve no purpose anymore.

Regardless, it really is a crammed cluster **** on the LHS of these 24v auto FTs! It’s beautifully designed and engineered, every single hose or wire has its place, everything has special retaining clips to hold it in its place. Where abrasion is an issue Toyota took care of that too. Most the clips are brittle now after 30yrs, some you can still get but not all. Engine wiring harness is getting cooked as well on the LHS after 30yrs. Which Toyota really did not want it anywhere other than how they designed it, no slack in any of it on this side to make adjustments. We had to replace two connections, one being the fuel cut solenoid due to being so brittle it crumbled taking it off. Wires in the engine harness are also reaching “end of life” becoming very stiff and hard, sheath cracking and terminals breaking is what is coming this next decade. At this point they sure could all use a rebuild, engine wiring harnesses that is.
