When you get rolling around on a 37" tire, running long distance down the highway the increased efficiency and power makes driving so much better. Not to mention deep snow wheeling which takes some decent power as well. Still not setting down huge power to justify the kind of action to the frames being some cruisers have high horsepower LS swapped engines. Also this isn't just for me as there are a couple members in my club running some big 80s, one on 40s and the added power for running on the road would be appreciated. With that though we are aware of the chain of upgrades that come down the line into the drivetrain to increase strength but that's not what this thread is about.
There has been a lot of developments in the diesel world and some of that technology can be applied into the older engines. Ball bearing turbos, impeller design, antisurge housings. Even piston design has improved. Improving efficiency of the engine gains power. Taking advantage and applying it to these engines which I think are awesome and worth playing with a little isn't a bad thing. If a person wanted to take the easy road just swap in a 6BT and be done with it. But even those engines have had people developing products that aren't factory to make them huge horsepower machines.
Are we talking compound turbos here and getting the head o-ringed. Not at all. For some strange reason when it comes to engines and the Cruiser community it doesn't take much to get to the borders of what is considered extreme here but not even considered much of anything in the rest of the diesel world.
I'm sure the cost of parts plays a big factor in what's considered extreme. A 1HD-T is closing in on $10K CAN to your door in a lot of cases, or you could grab an LS or Cummins for more like $3K, so the work to get it swapped is greater, but the consequences of pushing too far are much lower.
