1999 or 2006

Its an lx. Center lock button. Looks like the rear on my taco. Need to pay attention to where the “x” is.
Ah yeah. I think I've seen someone post a Canadian LX with an actual rear locker but I thought LX470's that year come with a limited slip rear and open front .

Unless you are doing some moderate trails that will likely be more than enough. I've just been pretty impressed with ATRAC.

That's weird.
We've looked at a bunch. Had a 200 series (2009) with 78K miles that was being sold for 34K. Second owner, Carfax showed two accidents, plus when I inspected it he had a torn CV boot (not a big deal) and pink crust all over the engine bay - like everywhere. I'd feel bad about slamming through the desert in something so nice.

But this 2006 is the first one where the owner flat out refused to give me the vin. I asked him to run the vin himself and then print out the dealer records and he still balked.

The 1999 has been serviced from day one at the lexus dealer and the owner is dropping it off at my mechanic on Monday for him to inspect.

The 99 seems like a better buying scenario. When you comparing the two. You would be shorting yourself comparing a bad scenario 2006 and the good scenario 1999. If you want a 2006-2007, wait for the right one with buying transparency.

I've got one of each in the driveway. The 06 is supposed to be my daily driver. The 99 is supposed to be our extra vehicle and off road toy. I enjoy driving both of them, and I generally just take whichever is in the back of the driveway. For some inexplicable reason the 99 has evolved into our preferred road trip vehicle.

A detailed list of the model year differences can be found at 100 Series Newbie Guide - Slee Off Road - https://sleeoffroad.com/tech-zone/100-series-newbie-guide/

The differences that I notice when hopping from the 99 into the 06, VGRS (steering is quicker, and has less effort), 5spd (lower 1st gear pulling away from a stop), VVTI (seems a little happier at the top of a gear), "drive by wire" (accelerator feels different), EBD (brake pedal feels different), and dash looks/feels a little more modern.

You don't mention how you intend to use the vehicle. There are a few minor differences that might make a difference to you, if you have small kids (child seat anchor points), if a kid or significant other is going to be the primary driver (VSC/RSCA), if you plan to use the vehicle off road (ATRAC/2-pinion diff), or if this is going to be your primary daily driver (5spd/VVTI).

While reluctance of sharing the VIN might concern me about issues in the car's history, I can also somewhat understand not wanting to pass the VIN to someone that wasn't interested enough to see the vehicle in person, considering all of the "thumb over the license plate" pictures that I see in ads.

Close call, but for me it was interior aesthetics that tilted my decision. I didn’t want nav. But there are a lot of factors that go into this, and a number of threads you can read to sort the plusses and minuses. I spent almost a year looking for one that checked all my boxes.

Where did each of these trucks live? Any signs of rust on either?

Our kids are both in college. I’m semi-retired. Wife has a 2018 4runner, I have a 2017 Cummins.

We spend a lot of time on the BLM roads in Grand staircase/Escalante to reach areas where we hike or mountain bike. Was using a 2019 tacoma for that, but I’ve been less than enamored with the truck...plus the Ram covers any truck needs....so I sold it.

The lx would be used to bang those BLM roads. I’d plan on lifting it, putting sliders and front and rear bumpers on it and probably lockers. Don’t need nav.....just Bluetooth and CarPlay.....

The nice thing about the 99, other then the low miles, is the fact that I can see 22 years of records for it.

Last night the owner of the 06 emailed me a copy of the Lexus service records plus his service receipts which are thin. There are service gaps. The truck is in beautiful condition.

They are asking 26k for the 06. They are asking $21k for the 99. Not sure what the current market value is for either. They essentially have the same mileage.

Based on all that i change my opinion...I'd get the 99.

Not to throw a wrench in your plans (or direct outside of the site), but cars & bids looks like it is having a 100 series almost on the daily. It has been great for transparency and I’ve been watching prices and it seems fair for seller and bidder. Something worth keeping an eye out. I think that 99 as you describe it, is right on the mark. The 06’ would be nice but the lack of transparency at that price point, I’d be out.

No way Id pay 21K for a 99 LX with a 2-pinion front, limited slip rear end, and aging AHC. No way. Also for 26K on the 06 you are getting into 200 series territory.

Correct. US market LX470's for year models 98-99 came standard with a rear Limited Slip and open (2 pinion) front diff.

Canadian models are reported to have had a rear locker.

US market Land Cruisers (year models 98-99) had an OPTION of a rear locker. All models from 2000 on went to ATRAC.

Yeah I about gagged when I saw that price ,but used cars and boats in my area have been INSANE so I wasn't too surprised. 1 owner with 85k miles is pretty rare

Yeah, I don't get overpaying for low millage. The age is still there. Bushings, rubber, plastic, hoses, etc.. all will need replacing anyway because of age.
The fact that the valve cover gaskets were just replaced on the “low milage” 99 should tell you all you need to know about how age affects a vehicle.
Wonder what gaskets/seals will need to be replaced next on the $21k 99?

I think the seller transparency says a lot about the vehicle. Unless it was a screaming deal I would walk from the 06’, and I’d find another to compare the 99 to.

I’d buy the 06 if it were me. There is nothing you can buy that’s this well built for 26k. And that mileage is so low. I’ve been daily driving my 04 LC for 6 years and it’s been the best vehicle I’ve ever had. Best of luck.

Except for an early 200. $26k is just too much for a 100.

An early 200 for 26k will have twice the mileage from what I’ve researched. Also, to me, there’s nothing quite like the 100 series.

I found mint 2009 Classic Silver 200 with only 125k miles on it last year for my mother for only $25,500. From a dealer. I consider that low milage. The 200 is superior over the 100 in every measurable way if you take emotion out of the picture.
I love 100s and think they are great when the price is right. It just makes no sense to spend 200 money on a 100.
