Locally for sale. Gas engine. Auto transmission. Center diff lock only. Has 317k miles. Is that too many miles to not expect issues sooner than later? Great looking truck but for just a bit more I can get a JDM import diesel with almost half the miles.

It depends. My ‘97 3 locked grocery getter has 305,000 miles.

Depending on your standards of maintenance and preventative maintenance and most importantly your cash flow, 300k+++ is nothing to be concerned about.

Has the HG been done? Any maintenance history? How many owners? What is the condition of the underbody? Any mods??
1996 Toyota Land Cruiser
New leather upholstery
Center diff lock
Old Man Emu 3 inch heavy lift kit
Trail gear front steel bumper
12,000 pound winch
Ironman rooftop tent with additional room tent
Third row jump seats
Regular Oil changes
Mud terrain 35 inch tires

That's all the ad says. Looks great in pics but that's doesn't tell much of the story. I wanted to see what the thoughts were on the mileage before I started asking questions.

My 97 is past that and original HG. serviced from dealer since new prior to my ownership. They all will need continued maintenance at this age. Focus on service history and actual condition. Does hurt to get a compression/leak down if concerned with miles. best of luck

317k is not a big deal if the vehicle has been well-maintained. Engine-wise, the straight six is underpowered, but reliable because it’s not high-strung like today’s engines. However, you should be financially prepared to replace the HG. There will probably be items that will need to be replaced, especially if original—rubber hoses, gaskets, belts, o-rings, bearings, etc.

Ateast it's a 96 so it'll have the 4.5 vs the 4.0. And yeah, is expect to have to start doing maintenance stuff sooner than later.

Sounds a bit overpriced. Perhaps he's trying to get money back from the mods which actually detract from the value IMO.

I never posted the price.
Basing of the typical going price of Imported diesel models it sounds overpriced. The “mods” you listed are cheap and don’t add value IMO. It’s all about the maintenance when buying old Toyotas. Especially Land Cruisers.

You didn't have to. From the OP "but for just a bit more, I can get a JDM import diesel with almost half the miles"

The FZJ80 in question sounds over priced. No one on the other side of the internet is going to be able to help you answer your question of if 317k miles is too many with basically no information being provided.

:hmm:

VALUE IS SUBJECTIVE!!!

I would inquire if there is a Toyota specialty shop (preferably LC) in the area and have a pre-purchase inspection accomplished. If none is available, hit up the local clubhouse and see if someone that is knowledgeable can go with you and look it over.

I have helped people locally and have a couple good buddies can do the same for me. The person looking the truck over with you is not emotional about the purchase and therefore can note possible issues that you may disregard or overlook. I also like to video the walk around and look at it after I have left, you would be surprised how things look obvious in video that you didn't notice. Additionally, I bring a note pad and take notes of everything that needs fixing and/or will need fixing in the near future. I then calculate that into what I have for the initial budget.

@EWheeler said, we cannot determine the value but given the limited information we can only help guide you (as some have done above). The mere fact that you posted this question tells me that you feel the price is fair. Go into the purchase knowing that a 30 year old vehicle is going to need repairs and/or maintenance. Being in the rust belt area I would definitely be checking as rust never sleeps.

Lastly, go look at this truck but also take a looked at the referenced import that is similarly priced to get a feel for what one offers over the other. You will then have a comparison of sorts.
