It's difficult to give advice when we really don't know what is going on. Could you post your test results and what you did before each test in a summary form. That way, we can read through quickly and see what is happening. I'm sure you'll get more responses and more help that way.

And yes, just a new dizzy, cap and wires can do wonders. Not to mention a pcv....

Man, you are right. Sorry. I am a journalist. I am used to being long winded.

This is what my experience has been so far: BTW 1995 FZJ80 180K

First test:
2500RPM Idle
HC ppm 202 reading 220 allowed pass 409 reading 220 allowed fail
CO% 2.81 1.20 fail 3.93 1.20 fail

Second Test: Added two quarts Sea Foam, changed plugs, topped off with Premium Gas

2500RPM Idle
HC ppm 282 fail 451 fail
CO% 6.15 fail 7.10 fail

I thought that maybe some of the "snake oil" was actually doing its job. That was why the test results were worse.

Test 3: 1/2 tank left. Added more Sea Foam and stuff called "Guaranteed to Pass" Unplugged two vacuum lines on the top of the intake manifold, drove like a bat out of hell on the highway for 20 minutes and removed the air filter before taking the test.

2500RPM Idle
HC ppm 163 pass 238 fail
CO% 2.97 fail 1.08 pass

Wires, dizzy and cap would be my next step. Seems you're getting an incomplete combustion. Your CO results spiked the 2nd time because you got tested with seafoam in the tank. burn all that crap out, test again sans air filter. After that your options start to get a little more "involved."

Not sure if it helps, but here are my test results from yesterday. I did a pretty extensive cleaning of the intake and throttle body, replaced a bunch of vacuum lines, had the injectors cleaned, replaced both O2 sensors and put on a new set of Magnaflow stainless cats. This resolved all of my issues, including the dreaded P0401 code. I'd focus on parts rather than additives. You might spend a bit more money, but you'll fix the root cause.

I would run all those additives out of your tank before I spent money on new cats. Do do some research on here about getting emissions to pass. Seams like sea foam helps you fail more than pass

Yep, run that seafoam and additives outta there, make sure theres none left in tank....it will fail with that crap in there

Absolute change the oil, wires, plugs, distrib cap and rotor and that Cracked rubber intake tube that goes to manifold from air box (big red flag there) tape wont work....

cats should be last after all that is done

That's exactly what I am doing now. I just filled up a full tank after running out all the crap. I am looking for the distributor, wires and cap now. I was lucky enough to find the intake on Ebay. I have never replaced these parts before. Any good links on installation techniques? I am just assuming the distributor will have timing or placement issues. Will I be able to do it with common tools?
