Well it only took me a month and a half, but geese what a job! This has been the second vehicle I have put a 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine into and both swaps were completed with EXCELLENT results.I originally purchased a kzn130 halfcut from a company here in Southern California, after that I purchased this 4Runner with 178k miles on it with the notorious HG leaking in the 3VZ-E. After a lot of restoration and cleaning the 4Runner looks like it has been a garaged vehicle its whole life and is now one of the few here in the states. The new 1KZ-TE engine only has 78,800 miles on it so I will turn the mileage back to reflect the engine if the buyer wants. The outside has been clayed and waxed, all the chrome polished, and every wheel has been reconditioned. The interior was in excellent shape when I purchased it minus the carpet. The carpet was replaced with a complete carpet set which makes the inside of the vehicle look amazing when you open the doors. I have kept the stock 4Runner floor mats but they aren't in nearly as good as shape as they were when they were new, they do help to keep the carpet spotless while I test drive the vehicle for a couple of weeks. There are no rips in any of the seats, and the two cracks in the top of the dash will be fixed in the next couple of days. I was a car dealership auto detailer and we had to always repair cigarette burns, tears in seats or carpet, stains, leather repairs, hard plastic repairs, deodorization, etc. So rest assured when the potential buyer comes to look at the vehicle, the inside will look brand new just like the exterior.

From the time I started working on vehicles until today when I finished cleaning the wheels, I have payed the utmost attention to detail. I guess its a good thing that was passed down from my dad, though at times it really can get aggravating when you can't walk away. None the less this 4Runner is a great example of just that. From every bolt and nut, to every part on the engine, and everything in the engine compartment and beyond were repainted and restored to a factory/modified look. While the engine hasn't ever been offered here in the states, it looks and functions like it came from the local dealership in this condition. I have completely rewired the 4Runner keeping every relay in its place and using the no longer needed relays in place of the relays the diesel engine needed. I had to swap around some pins in the connectors, run some wires across the dash and core support and do some clean up work of the engine harness. The idle up switch, glow plug light, and all of the indicators work. The engine sounds mean when its coming down the road and shuts down very smooth. There have been countless hours of cleaning, when I purchased the vehicle the 3VZ-E had leaked its guts out, and trust me the frame and underside of the vehicle showed it. After cleaning by hand every square inch, I had to do little painting to achieve the new look.

The 4Runner came with the SR5 package, this includes: cruise control, air conditioning, moonroof, 4 wheel ABS, 4WD, power windows, power locks, etc. All of which I have verified are in working condition with the new engine in its place. This 4Runner runs and sounds amazing, turns heads on every street, and gets great gas mileage. Depending on your foot you can maintain anywhere from 20-30MPG. I have had my foot in it a more than I should be to be getting an accurate reading, but I can't help it. On the half of tank so far I've gone 176.4 miles which is 22MPG. These factory 5Spd transmissions are just perfect behind the 1KZ-TE and happen to be more rare as time goes on. I'll have to post again in a couple of days when I put a tank of gas through it driving normal, how the mileage changes.

There's just too much to list on this thread about what I've done so I'll make a brief list:

*Cleaned and reconditioned engine (gaskets, seals, belts, idler, tensioner, rebuilt injectors, cleaned and painted, filters replaced)
*Painted engine compartment and acessories

Thank you both fort the comments, I appreciate the kind words. I spent more time than anything else making the 4Runner look that part, so rest assured I'll be enjoying how it drives over the next couple of weeks. I have an 85 toyota pickup that had this engine, now I have another 1kzte with an auto tranny to put into my truck. I plan on getting a stand alone computer for the new auto tranny that will let me control every shift point, line pressure, TC lockup in all gears, and much more. After using a dyno I will set the tranny, one auto mode for efficiency one for the best overall power and then I'll have a fully manual mode that will allow me to shift the auto tranny when I want to with the use of the paddle shifters I will install on the steering wheel.

I'm actually already started on my truck so I'll be sure to post up those results when I am done as well.

I think I can speak with some authority and say that is a steal for that truck.

1KZ-TE is awesome, Toyota diesels are awesome, and this one looks to be one of the best examples I've seen of the converted trucks.

Good luck with the sale!

Dan

just curious...is it titled in CA as a pre-98 diesel? (in other words, is it smog exempt)...did it pass CARB?

I've dealt with DMV now twice on this very issue, once when I went to register my 85 pickup, and then when I went to register this 4runner. The first time at DMV I spent three-four hours there and ran around town chasing my tail, jumping through hoops for this stupid DMV official. So needless to say the second time around I had ALL my paperwork together. Since the vehicle, like you stated, is manufactured before 1998 it is smog exempt. I printed the very page from DMVS sight, highlighted that specific line on the page and when the next person at dmv went to say I had to get a smog I shower them the paperwork and within 10 mintues had the temp opp permit in hand. All that is left for the registration is me driving the vehicle to DMV so they can VISUALLY verify that it is a diesel. This entails literally just looking at the vehicle and took 20 minutes when I registered the truck.

Sorry for the big answer, DMV just isn't the most fun place to go at all.

Messages returned.

Dan, I appreciate it. It's nice to see others notice the amount of work I put into it.
I see you have a swapped 2lt-e, nice conversion! Are you over on the toyotadiesel site?

I am, but I spend a LOT more time here.

Go get the visual inspection, it is worth a lot of money to the kind of person who will want to buy a diesel converted truck. The two types of people who have these are either the guys who do it themselves, or those who want to buy a "turnkey" truck. Getting license plates on it is one of the easiest ways to make it truly "turnkey."

Out of curiosity, does CA issue a title with the fuel as "diesel?"

Just one question, “Why is it smog exempt because it was manufactured before 1998?”

Smog Information
"Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles manufactured prior to 1998 or with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older. "

I don't know why they picked 1998 as a cut-off year but I plan on taking it to a local emissions shop soon. I have a local friend who is going to bend me up a 3" exhaust, which will help lower the EGTs a little and give the 4Runner even more power. I have a 3" dump pipe i am going to be replicating so hopefully that will be done within the next week and a half.

Dan, in reference to your question, Yes. When you change the motive power from gas to diesel they do a visual inspection at the dmv office. I just have to return to dmv to get this final part of the registration completed. The title on my 85 was changed from gas to diesel, soon I'll have an automatic 1kzte and I will be able to set the tranny up with a stand alone computer.

Well done on this project. Wish your 4 Runner was in FL.

Do they care what year the diesel motor is?

From my understanding, the engine should be an equivalent model, or newer model engine than the one that is being removed. Though the DMV never asked about the status or where the 1kzte came from, it was a kzn130 halfcut of the same chassis overseas so I wouldn't think there would be a problem what so ever.

I have been putting about 800 miles a week on mine for just about a year in the next few weeks and it has performed perfectly.

This will make someone a very happy person.

Plus the diesel is awesome wheeling. It just crawls up everything.

This is a very good buy for someone.

What gears are you running?
