1994 FZJ80 4BTA Conversion, Locked in E. NC

For Sale: 1994 Toyota LandCruiser FZJ80 with Proffitt’s Cruisers Cummins turbo diesel conversion. The engine is a Remanufactured 2001 Cummins 3.9 liter 4BTA. I have a new project cruiser and I need to free up driveway space and money for the new truck. It needs to get gone which explains the low price, but I’m not going to give it away, so no low-ballers or trades please

The good: A strong running 4B motor. With the diesel conversion, comes a TCC built Black Panther 700R4 transmission, considered to be a step up from the typical 700R4 Proffitt’s uses in these types of conversions. Also I replaced the flex plate, wave ring and recently upgraded to a steel adapter plate cut by Bud Built so strengthen the torque converter adapter and wave ring. A Toyota split case eliminates the full-time 4wd these vehicles had in stock configuration. The early model transfer case allows 2wd for better fuel consumption and less wear on the front end. All major maintenance, seals, valve adjustment and fluids have been done in the last 30K miles. Truck drives great, gets decent mileage (16-19) and never fails to perform. It rolls well on the highway; you can run 65-70 pretty easy and not rattle the truck apart, over 75 the engine starts to vibrate a little more. Off road it shines, you don’t really have to go into low very often as the low end torque lets you idle over stuff pretty easy. A/C and heat work awesome, all the electronics work ok except for the reverse lights and the cruise control died not too long ago. Interior it pretty nice, the leather from Shane is really nice, new floor mats and a few new trim pieces make it a little better. The truck definitely turns heads, and people seem to dig the diesel. The Dealership guys love it. The engine is easy to work on and any diesel shop can get parts as long as you have the S/N handy.

The bad and quirky.

- It’s loud, it rattles, you get the obligatory puff of smoke on start up and get the spy hunter smoke screen if you really mash the skinny pedal. I may advance the timing a little to reduce the vibrations and smoke.
- Since I used 100 series pads on the front and new rotors, I couldn’t fit the anti-squeal pads in there, so the front brakes give you a little squeal now and then.
- It’s also kind of slow to get rolling. You definitely ain’t gonna win any races with it.
- There is a water leak, I think it’s the windshield as the PO had a new windshield put in before I bought it. You get a little dampness on the DS carpet area after a real hard rain.
- When I drilled the hole for the spotlight, I forgot about the sunroof drain tube and drilled right thru it on the DS pillar. So, I sealed up the sunroof with RTV as I never used it anyway.
- Did I mention it’s loud?
- The speedo is about 10% off, haven’t had the time to have it re-calibrated
- Oh yeah, it’s loud.;)

80 Series “usual” stuff
- PS mirror has the 80 Series wobble going, I have it shimmed up with weather stripping so the wobble is stopped.
- A backlight bulb is out on the heater control panel, and also one on the right side of the gauge cluster.
- Keyless entry works when it wants to. Locks the doors fine, unlocks maybe.
- Windows are slow in the winter

- To preserve the turbo’s bearings, it takes 5-7 minutes for the EGTs to cool down. I was planning on adding a turbo timer, but never got around to it. I also am considering adding a closed loop heat exchanger for the aftercooler and see what that will do to the EGTs, and when I advance the timing it may help also.
- Did I remember to tell you it was loud?

So, most of the “bads” aren’t really that bad. The “loud" isn’t that bad either, it’s loud outside, but the PO lined most of the interior with sound proofing which helps a bunch. The AT/KOs are quiet and good for around town driving. I have really enjoyed this truck, and it has really gotten me up to speed on diesels and turbo diesels. The PO maintained it well, and I have continued the trend. Aside from a few of the quirky electronic gremlins, it has been a relatively trouble-free truck. All I have done is a new water pump and new fuel line, and had to re-torque some loose flywheel bolts.

I’d love to keep it, but the truck I just got is well worth parting with the 80 and I need to get back what is in the 80 and what I overspent on the new cruiser.

13.5K Firm

Thanks for looking.

Any pic's under the hood?

Best of luck Alex, hope someone close buys this! It is a good one, too bad timing isn't right for me...

Can't wait to see the new rigs.

Yeah, I'd love to keep it, but with the newly arrived HZJ75, the wife is on my ass to thin the herd:grinpimp:

The rear bumper and sliders for the BJ are coming in tomorrow, I need to fix the last few spots of corrosion so I can get it to LineX next week.

Viggen, PM replied.

ForrestGump9, yes the rack and barrier are both removable. You can remove just the barrier and leave the rack, but once the rack is out, you can't use the barrier.

I've ridden in it before you owned it. Free bump for a good truck.
Where is redneck central...thats a very debatable location in NC
Congrats on the 75

that's not a bad price at all, considering how much money has gone into this rig. i also appreciate the honest and detailed post.

free bump for ya.

Thanks for the kind words. As I said, I'd love to keep it, but I have too many ponies in the stable for the wife's liking:grinpimp:

I'm getting back home off of an extended road trip this afternoon, I'll have pics up with the link on my photobucket account soon.

Thanks BHM

Here's the Photobucket pics, I'll take more as you need.

I've got the old powdercoat and loose rust stripped off the rear bumper as you can see in the pics, sometime over the next week or two I'll be treating and POR-15ing the rear bumper and sliders.

I'll be on the road quite a bit over the next 2 weeks or so, if I don't get back you any of you with Q's, sorry, I'll get to them when I can:meh:

Dude u couldn't have waited one year huh??? Andrea's car would have been paid off w:grinpimp:

Well, we'll see if it sells before I leave for Afghanistan. If not, It'll still be around next year. I may also sell the BJ70 now that I have the HZJ75.:hhmm:

Thanks again for the axle transport. Merry X-mas:cheers:

Bump-a-rooney for the new year

I have a question, just curious how is your MPG's with this diesel conversion and the transfer case swap allowing you to run 2wd?
