Baldilocks, post pics of your rolled 80 and ask the forum for sugestions. In 2012 we bought a pristine 1992 fj80 with elocker axles. The next weekend we cut 24 inches out of the roof and moved the rear forward. Then converted the rear into a truck and put 315's on it. Then did the Rubicon a few times and realized we had poor depature angle and chucked the doors and rear end. I suppose I'm leaving a bit out (lifted, built a roll cage and about a thousand periphial parts). Of course cut the fenders above the flare holes and did the washer mod for caster.

Bought a cheap tubing benders to make bumpers and roll cage.

Then a few years later, after extensive research on the best way to strengthen tube doors, we decided on the spider web pattern (not really, I saw an episode of American chopper and thought it looked cool) cutting off the rear of the frame gave us great departure angle .Every single thing on the truck had to be hand fabricated. Even the aluminum truck box had to be modified to fit correctly

It's been a fun project because I enjoy fabrication. We tried tractor lights for rock lights but they did not work well. We switched to green LED strips and they work well. This is a photo of Shane going up the Soup Bowl one night on the Rubicon trail. We bought PRP seats to allow for harmesses. Built a custom ported sub box to sport 2(12 inch) Kenwood comp subwoofers. The ports open to the sides of the rear seat so they are unobstructed. Kenwood amps and 6x9's push big sound.

We also converted the rear elocker accuator to CO2 activated. That was interesting because I knew nothing about pnuematics. Here is pics of my accuator. I built a rack with a folding light mount using hood rams. Wish I had the funds for LED's, these halogens soak up too much juice.

Camino, thanks for the right up and photos. I have some photos of mine after the roll but they suck because the sun was low. My roof is pushed in and windshield broken out. I think that the drivers "A" pillar is the only bent pillar though. There are numerous other dents and bruises but she still runs and drives well.
Was just kicking around the idea of having two rigs and keep this one for combat with the rocks. I have already purchased a 1993 with elockers to replace the 94 I rolled. My original plan was to sell the elocker axles and possibly the power train out of the 93 and swap in all my stuff including the very clean interior. Everytime I see an 80 set up similar to yours I start thinking about a different plan though. Still in the contemplation stage because I sold a trailer queen crawler to get into a more versatile rig and the 80 fits my needs very well.

i also was looking to do something like this but ended up parting it out. after it was all said and done it would still be an 80 which is a great jack of all trades but not really a good platform to build a truggy on imo.

I think your right about it not being a great platform for a truggy. But if you are looking for a 5 seater truggy that already has lockers and disc brakes and heavy duty parts, it works pretty good.

That bad boy barely fits the gate at Barrett.

This beauty belongs to another Mud member . What he did is exactly what I was thinking what with chopping my roof and caging it in to make a Lexan windshield. If I did something like this it would have to be done very economically. Decent tube benders are not cheap!

that looks cool. The roof could be a snap-on canvas, and the windshield could be snap-on or even hinged like a jeep. You should go for it. I would chuck the body past the doors.

Built this center console a couple of weeks ago. twice as big as stock with 3 outlets a USB jack for stereo and a glock box over the emergency brake handle.

Love the Martian lights! I have green LEDs in the doors. What brand/length of light strips did you use?

i originally thought of the canvas roof but knew it would get destroyed on trees that i somehow always end up leaning against. i ended up buying a 5x10 alum sheet since it was cheap and basically indestructible. we welded threaded tabs to the roll cage so all the bolts are easy to remove if you wanted take it off.

the windshield is attached with quick release mounts for SxS's. you can take it off in a matter of minutes

I like this this thread. I've always had a soft spot for this bobbed and dove-tailed 80
