The time has finally come. Too bad, but I guess Toyota can't make this old stuff forever.

I'm a bit surprised, as these engines were still used into the early 2000's. (LN165 for example).

Guess I better find old stock somewhere so I have one ready to go, lol.

Hi GTS, you know your 2LT stuff! Maybe you solve my dilemma. I found a new Toyota OEM improved head (3L head) for my 1989 Surf 2LT. What head gasket should I use? The vendor for the head said to use a 11115-54071 (3L). Another site (Cruiserparts,N.H. USA), says to use the 11115-54082 (2LT).
If the heads are the same,54121/54131, you would expect either gasket would work as well.
Not sure how to proceed.
Thanks, George.

Did you confirm this with a Toyota dealer who has access to the Parts Master?

It'll only help one person, if at all.... But I've got an upgraded 3L head in the box on my shelf, and have since I got the 2LT-E into the faux-lux. Never needed it. The faux-lux has worn out the engine (all 4 cylinders are low compression) and when I get around to getting it drivable again I'll probably be looking at another engine swap to a more modern diesel.

So there's at least one 3L head hiding around the world. ;)

Did I sell that one to you like 10 years ago? 😄

I'm not sure, just look all that up on toyodiy or megazip? (Toyota EPC drawings)

Has anyone installed a head from Rocky Mountain Imports?

They have the 2LT/3l after market bare heads available.

The salesman said the heads are from China, but they have not had any problems with them (bare head, no valves/camshaft).
Big project to find out head may not be reliable.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks, George.

I just sold one, they’re still available

Cool! Finally get to see the real thing!
How much are you selling these heads for?
What would shipping be to NY 12919 (Champlain, N.Y.)
Prefer to install OEM Toyota, a lot of work to replace the head.
Thanks for helping me out.
George.

Hey George, Emailed you back. Thanks

Here in JDM import land there are heaps of aftermarket replacement heads. They seem to work fine in almost all cases.

Toyota are still putting the 5L-E in new vehicles. A 5L head will work fine on any OHC L engine (2LII, 2LII-T, 2LII-TE, 3L, 5L). Also, because it's being put into a production vehicle at present, the head is much cheaper than a 2L/3L head;

I see no evidence of the 3L head being out of production, and Partsouq have a 2L: https://partsouq.com/en/search/all?q=11101-54111 and 3L: https://partsouq.com/en/search/all?q=11101-54131 heads in stock.

So a definite 'no' to the above heads being discontinued. As Toyota only sell bare heads (i.e. not built up with engine-specific cams), you are probably better off putting a 5L or 3L head on a 2L as I believe they have better cooling.

Which poor souls have to buy those?
Over here in SE Asia you can get a 150 Series Prado with the 5L-E. Fine for driving around town but not much fun on the highway!

Megazip/Partsouq/Amayama were all out and that same part number when I wrote that first post. So this is great news some are back in stock now!! Thanks much for checking.

II was under impression the 5L/E head was not backward compatible to the 2L or 3L. Something about cam is at a different height and timing belt doesn't work...? I should look back into it. 5L has bigger valves, so might flow better.

I think the replacement head which is listed for the early 2LTE is no longer available though? 11101-54121

2LT, 2LTE heads are NLA
You can’t use Megazip/Partsouq/Amayama as a gauge for availability. Those vendors also say they have parts in stock that are NLA. 2 weeks after ordering you get a refund for the keystone part you needed and get stuck with a box of other parts that were supposed to bolt to it that you can’t use…
