To many stories for me to type.

The beginning:

I was unemployed and living in a warehouse trying to start a business. I was reading a offroad magazine while at my desk and saw an advertisement about this rally.

On a whim and a dream of adventure, I filled out the form and mailed it in.

A couple weeks later I get a phone call. No cell phones back then. A real phone sitting on my desk.

A lady from Exploration Society who was promoting the race was on the line. She was asking me to enter the rally. Holy cow.....I said thanks but no thanks. Way out of my budget being unemployed basically.

She calls back a few weeks later with an offer.

"Would you be interested if we paid for everything in exchange for you to bring your landcruiser and carry some press people who are covering the race."

W....T......H !!!!

"Okay", I said.

I loaded LC on trailer and took it to New Orleans (from Jacksonville Florida) where all the vehicles were being shipped to Columbia.

No idea what I was getting into.......

I have the VHS of this video. It was broadcast on TV long time ago, Can't remember the name of the show. Haven't watched it in 30 years. Was blown away when, by chance, I did a google search about the rally and the video showed up on YouTube the other day.

My LC was slow but awesome. One problem in the beginning with clutch slave cylinder. Word got out I needed repair and a local shop found me and I drove to their shop where the fixed it. Refused payment. Only wanted autograph. lol We were all treated like celebrities where ever we went.

Never had a flat tire. Made it all the way to the end.

At 4:08 I'm standing on my hood loading stuff onto my roof rack.
At 8:08 my LC is back left of the wrecked car.
At 22:15 in line at Peru border.
At 39:19 I'm in the road blocking the lead vehicle. lol

My LC in New Orleans before loading on ship.

Wow, what a trek! Not sure though I can believe that the race “authorities” had enough information to accurately declare who actually won, etc. 😂
