It’s the big day. FJ has been parked since pre-covid but I’m bringing her back to life!

To my amazement, she fired up after two starter chugs and idled like a champ despite blowing out settled rust and cobwebs.

BUT she’s got a starter issue… sometimes she starts, sometimes she doesn’t.

So ordered a remanufactured 3F starter through eBay and after a fight and some choice words, managed to pull the original for a comparison.

Will report back when new one is in and hopefully the world is a better place (for me) with an FJ that actually starts when you turn the key!

More fighting, rust chips, oil drips in eyes, mouth, face - and more choice words - but new starter is in!

Charged up the battery, fired up right away like a champ! Sort of caught me off guard as old starter was quieter and deader, clinging to life. New one has got the dramatic spice, very quick and powerful start up. This is what I was looking for.

Re: keep the old starter - that is definitely the plan - gonna take it to a local starter shop, get it rebuilt for a rainy day, hopefully in wayyy off future.

I didn’t refresh ground strap cable or any other connectors BUT I was under there inspecting it all, cables covered in grease, looking tired, so got a shopping list going.

Near future plan is to replace all battery cables, get a fresh ground strap, grind down surfaces to get fresh metal for those connections, etc.
