Having trouble getting my 85 smogged, car idles to rough. I’m more than certain it’s a vacuum leak, not only am I able to hear it but when the ICS is screwed in all the way the engine wouldn’t give out. So far I’ve put a new OEM TPS sensor and made sure everything was in spec with a multimeter, replaced the TB gasket and cleaned it out, replaced the ICS and checked the resistance of the air valve as well because I’ve read that this could be a culprit when it comes to your engine idling rough, it read 49.99 ohm’s so it fell within spec. Replaced the IAC valve that I’m pinching in the pictures, the other one is in better condition and doesn’t seem to need to be replaced. Engine sounds better than before all of this, when screwing the ICS all the way in now the engine gives out whereas previously it didn’t before. Took it to a mechanic and he recommended to buy a new Air Flow Meter because when he sprayed carb cleaner around the engine he didn’t see anything strange, haven’t tested it out with my multimeter yet but I’ll make sure it doesn’t work before I buy one. Before buying a smoke machine, anyone have any suggestions as to what I should look into?

Also, does anyone know what the loose green wiring that is in the pictures connect to?

I see you have replaced the AC diaphragm. Are you sure those two little vacuum hoses off the VSV are not switched? That would cause a vacuum leak.

The hose on the left of the VSV goes to the top of the diaphragm and the one on the right goes to the bottom. I’m also noticing that the diaphragm in your picture is pointing with the spring up and mine is down. Could this be a problem as well? This is also the area where I’m hearing the most air come from. I didn’t replace it the previous owner did, he put a new AC compressor in and so on.

how are your intake tube boots?
Looks good to me, I’m using a makeshift stethoscope made with a funnel and a clear hose, as my means to find the vacuum leak. Noticed that I hear the most air around the IAC valve I replaced which is right next to the AC diaphragm someone here could be a culprit as well.

As I recall there is a replacement part number for the diaphragm that is like yours. It looks like your vacuum hoses from the VSV are correct.

Right, I switched to out and the ran the engine and it sounded worse than it did before so I figured they were in their proper place. What do you think about my diaphragm being inverted compared to the one you can see on your picture?

Not a problem running it upside down.
