Thanks klf! I wasn't able to clean it up today so probly in a few days I'll be able to take a look. If it is the seal I'll be sure to check out the groove and see if that's what's causing it. Thanks so much for the help.

When I took my engine out I was plagued by a chronic leak at this seal, and I had a groove in the balancer. What I did was make a spacer out of a piece of 16-ga aluminum that I used to press in a new seal, which pushed the seal a little deeper into the oil pump, so the lip rides at a different spot on the balancer. No leaks whatsoever after 5000 miles, so I guess it worked.

Get an OEM seal.

This trick will only work with an OEM seal. The height on an OEM seal is less than the aftermarket seals. With the aftermarket seals, it seats all the way down in the oil pump. The OEM seal is thinner, and can be pushed further down so the seal rides in a different place on the pulley.

See... Another reason to get the OEM part.

(didn't know this, thanks)

When I've done the timing chain on both my trucks I used a fel-peo seal and a speedy-sleeve and have had really good luck. Its all in making sure it sits flush and you remember to use the lock-tight they give you. And remembering to oil the seal when putting it in and oiling the part of the seal where the crank pully seats.

So much knowledge being spread! I'm actually excited to get under there and clean up. I'm hoping the main seal is the issue since I know what to look for and where to go. I'll post some before and after pictures of the cleanup and hopefully the leak will show itself after a few miles. I only drive 50 miles a week roughly so a slow leak would take forever to find.

Gave it a quick shot with some engine degreaser. Cleaned a good but of oil off. Mainly worried about the thin wet stuff and that came off easy. Going to let it run for a few days then check it out. Also adjusted my idle about 1/8th turn up and seems to be running better.
These pictures are pretty rinse. I'll get some after pictures once I'm done. Might spray some more cleaner. Also this is the front and passenger side.

Another thought. I wanna know what's going on in my engine at all times. But odb2 readers won't work on odb1. Anyone know of any gauges, or digital systems that I can hook up that will tell me everything on one screen or multiple gauge pods? I'm hoping more for a scangauge type reader but I may just have to settle with gauge pods.<br/>

An '85 22RE isn't OBD1, it's barely OBD0. There is an engine ECU for the EFI, but it is the 1st version. No digital output, except the CEL.

Kinda like this...

All those gauges (except the Volts) are mechanical. The Water Temp gauge was a royal PITA to install, but it was worth it. Very accurate.

After running and driving for around an hour for the past 3 days, I finally found it! Coming from the oil pump area but I'm thinking maybe a gasket that goes on the cover. Not a big leak and its only coming from the one bolt area.

And on another note, Brown Santa showed up yesterday. Brought the first peice to the steering puzzle. Now I just gotta fork out $400 for the hi steer arms and steering box brackets. Hopefully I can do the steering before the lone Star Toyota jamboree at the end of the month!

If you haven't done your timing chain you should do it and make sure the gasket kit you get comes with the oil pump gasket and then you can replace the front seal and the oil pump.

I'm gonna order the timing chain and gasket kit and hopefully get it knocked out during my vacation this month. The leak is very SLOW. Hasn't really gotten dirty since I cleaned it up so it should last until then. Thanks for everyone's help.
