I purchased a 1976 40 but it had no disc brakes so the axle must have been swapped out before with an older axle. I bought a 1985 4runner front axle and tried to do the Birfield and disc swap to my 40 but the passenger side axle was about 2 inches too short after comparing axles, it would go in after grinding the housing but would not reach the diff. in the 40 axle. All the stuff I read said they should swap so the 40 must have an axle from something else.
I was thinking of just swapping the `85 axle housing and all but not sure if it would hold up to my chevy 350. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, sgcruiser

Don't swap the 4R axle. Wrong width, wrong ratio, wrong GVWR, wrong wrong wrong.

On the SAS minitruck to LC disk swap you use the birfield, knuckle, spindle, etc NOT the inner axles. Use your LC inner axles. Read this Land Cruiser Disc Brake Conversion

Pictures are pretty much SOP for anyone to try and help identify what you are working with.

unless you have a really old axle your inner axles should be 27 spline like the birfs in the 4runner axle

I missed that part about the inner axles!
Thank you so much!!!

Hi All:

Nope, the drum brake Birfield joints have coarse-splines at the hubs.

So you have already swaped the knuckles from the 4runner to the 40 housings?

Do you have the non US drums by any chance? if you do you wouldn't need to change brfs.

I think he means the splines on the inner axles where they go to the brfs.
