Sill rebuild

Also, Bill got started on the dissection of the Sill that Paul built and Cruiser_guy mud shipped all the way from Costa Rica. Sucks to have to tear apart a complete Sill, but no choice, just too far off. I am going to use part of it along with parts from the factory original and graft them together to make a my new Sill. The Sill from Paul is good, but not close enough to the original for me to use. The corners are way off and the center to center hole spacing is not correct. The large main back piece though is very close to original so I will begin with it and build back from there. This will be easier than trying to completely rework my rusty Sill. Luckily, the Sill corners on my truck are good. Those would have been the most difficult part of the entire Sill for me to have reproduced. Next step is to get the original Sill off the truck. Once I finish the LR Qtr, I will begin to rework the Sill and then install it along with the L&R Qtr skins at one time.

Probably because the sill from my truck was REALLY rough!! You can only make a good repro if you have a good sample.

That is what I figure, but the hole spacing is strange. Was your tailgate so messed up that the hinge location would be off? It is only off by about 1/2" but unfortunately the captured plates would not allow for that much adjustment. It was out side of that distance. I will get some precise measurements and notes to send to you for adjustments.

Quick update

I continue to work on the RR Qtr. With holidays, family, my bad back and slicing my finger open New Years Eve, stupid, progress has been slow. But it does continue. Bill has been working on the front seat where it had been bent from years of use. Hopefully was just some large guy and not a weakness in the design. Got the lower corner tacked to the tail light bucket. Got the rear floor corner tacked in. Next will be the lower lip of the corner. That will be tricky. After that I should be able to stitch it all back together. Anyhow, here are some pics.

more 2

Brackets for the captured nuts where the floor pan meets the rear floor under the rear passenger seat. Working on the last few details that will allow the floor to go back in. However, I like the access not having the floor in allows so I will hold off on reinstalling it until I know I will not need to crawl up in her.

911 RS

Peter, this one is for you. I am already planning my next project. Yea, I know, but don't rain on my parade. Anyhow, this is off track, but, hey it is my thread so I am allowed. I will be building a 911 RS replica. This car is similar in theory to the Icon product built by J. Ward in that it is a re-creation of an icon with some modern updates. Any how enjoy.

Not bad :clap::clap:....
...but first finish your LV project :D

You do a perfect job on your LV restoration !!!!:clap:

Cheers
Peter

Peter, great video. I agree, Duck tail is the only tail for my early 911. I do want to finish the LV, but with the economy down, now may be the best time to buy a early 911. I had a 1973 911S and really miss it.

Here is a video for you: YouTube - Classic 911 2.7 RS - Porsche Experience TV

welding help needed

Can anyone with welding experience help me? My welder all of the sudden has stopped working properly. As you can see in the pics, it is not burning in like it should. When the wire hits the metal it pops and splatters. It is also leaving a sort of burned residue on the metal. From what I read, it sounds like the gas is not shielding properly. I checked what I know ground, nozzle is not clogged, wire feeds properly, I even replace the liner just to be sure. Not out of gas, adjustments to gas, current and wire speed do nothing. On top of it not working, apparently the fumes being put off are extra toxic. Normally I wear a mask, but while trying to fix the welder, I did not wear one and now my nose, throat and lungs feel like they are fried and I am coughing terribly. I know dumb, but I just kept testing it on and off and did not think about not having the mask. Very frustrating. Trying to avoid having to carry it to repair center.

Are you getting gas out of the gun? can you hear/ feel it coming out when you pull the trigger? I agree it looks like no gas. Regulator set up correctly? Sticky needle on the regulator causing false reading? - they are usually cheap Chinese gauges and I've seen damaged ones do that with a bent housing. Can you hear the solenoid clicking to flow gas? Do you have a flow meter on your setup? - does it show flow? Just throwing out ideas. We're talking about a smallish MIG yes?

PS - I M not a expurt

Yes I am getting flow, at least I hear it at the gun. I also hear a clicking sound which I am thinking is the solenoid you refer to? I do have a flow meter and I had it dialed in at around 22 but have tried moving it up and down just in case it was malfunctioning. Seems to be working. Yes it is a smallish mig, Lincoln Electric 125. One more thing, when you look at the weld pool, it now looks like it is a blow torch or something and again lots of spatter and pop. Really screwed up my last piece before I realized something was wrong. I kept thinking I was loosing my skill or something. What is so weird is I had it dialed in and then out of the blue it crapped. But that is how it works I guess, one minute something works and then it breaks? Keep the ideas coming.

I'd go with gas problem first. I sometimes forget to adjust my flow on mine and it will splatter and be nasty.
Are your rollers coated with a film? causing it to hop? might try checking the tension on the rollers by the spool that feed the wire thru the gun. then check depending on machine the tension on the actual spool. if all that fails check your leads for something loose. the ground clamp might be loose? or the hot to the gun might be loose. What machine? 125 Lincoln from Home depot or welding shop? It's my understanding the home depot version has plastic rollers and the welding shop has steel.

Hi Mark
don`t know if you got my re pm....

forgotten ;)
people must make phone calls to win the cars...
so the restoration costs are not significant for them,
they earn more money with this calls than the restoration cost.:D

Did you change your pos neg at any point I have seen that done before when guys switch from flux core to shielded wire and forget to change it over if thats not it I would take the bottle back and get some new gas sounds like you may have gotten co2 instead of blue shield mix
