Got a couple hours in this morning. Started working on that inner brace that was bent up pretty bad. That thing was kinda a pain in the ass to make, in hind sight I wish I would have just straighten the old one. Either way, it's made now.

Also made the brackets that support the hinge plate and hold it in there. I didn't even bother taking the old ones out. Just measured the brackets while there were still spot welded in the old piece. Cut and bent up new ones.

As I was coming to work I stopped at the steel store and bought a piece of 1/4" x 2" wide flat stock. Have to make those 2 plates that float in those brackets that the hinges thread into.

Pics of this mornings fun....

Do you ever hesitate to tear something apart and re-fabricate it? Like maybe someone has this part and you could just buy it and bolt it in? I think what you're doing is pretty fantastic, but wow!

Do you have a shear or nibblers or grinder or all of the above?

All of the above......and then some. 3 in 1 / 52" metal shear/brake/roller is the most used tool of them all. It's the tool that fabricates the majority of the parts you guys see.

Pic below is exactly what I have and am using. Link to exactly the same thing from Harbor freight if your interested:

As far as hesitate to tear something apart.....no, in fact sometimes I'm a little to aggresive when it comes to tearing stuff apart. Sometimes I need to slow down a bit, label things or get some pics. But, I've got the tools and when I get in the zone, s*** happens fast.

I'd probably buy a part and bolt it in if it was available, but none of this stuff is? Pretty much on my own with this lv stuff. I will be buying a few things from SOR, like the headliner and welting trim, but that's about it. Wife put the smack down on the color they make in grey. I emailed SOR, they are only making there upolestry in that color, no others. So......when the time comes, you guys are going to be seeing some custom upolostery work also.

Hah, very cool!! how well does it run?

Actually pretty good, it doesn't have a ton of miles on it. 120,000 kilometers, so 70k miles ish I suppose.

Starts right up after you hold the glow switch in for about 8 seconds. Idles nice, runs nice, goes through all the gears good. Does what it supposed to.

He should have fun ;)

Got a little over an hour in tonight. I had finished making those new 1/4" steel threaded plates, where the tailgate hinges thread into, I think you can see them on the saw horse. Old ones were rusted solid.

Also cleaned up that piece that I cut out of the old door skin where the door handle mounts to and the license plate. Blasted it up and primed.

Hopefully more work tomorrow on the tailgate. Start putting more pieces back together. :)

Cruiser Guy,

Could you post a pic of those 3 x-members across the top. I would like to see how there bolted in?

Thanks, Matt

Here's the end of the crossmember, as for how they are when bolted in you'll need to wait till I get there! I'm not as fast as you :)

Got a good day in today on the lv, even got the wife involved again. She's good at running the brake :)

Started the day off by welding in those brackets and plates that the tailgate hinge mount to. I won't go into a lot of detail, because I think the pics explain everything. Not complicated, but took a few hours to get that done.

What took most of the day was fabbing up a new rear tailgate skin. I welded the pieces that I had cut out of the old one back in that POS so I could make some accurate measurements. I think you can see all the #'s written on the back side?

After I got some solid #'s I started cutting out the new piece. I bent the sides at 90 degrees first, so that when the tailgate shell sits down in there, all that would need to be done is fold those down. Should be rather easy since they are started now. After I bent those I cut reliefs in those bends so I could make the other bends across the entire length of the tailgate. None of them were 90's so it was fairly easy. I did however have to change some dies around in the brake so that I could fit the dies inside those previous bends I had made on each side. Once I got the brake set up, went good.

After the tailgate was bent up, did some test fitting, actually fit pretty good the first time without any major mods. Started transfering the measurements over from the old skin for the license plate holder. I used a piece of tag board to trace the holes onto and then I transfered those onto the new skin, that worked pretty good. After I had everything cut out real nice and neat, I primed the back side with DP. Once that was done I started welding the plate holder back in. Also made this metal piece that goes right above it, not sure what it does, but it was on the old one.

After all that was done I fit it back on and then snugged up those 2 braces in the tailgate I had not weld yet up against the plate on the inside, they get welded there to. Made some marks and the pulled the skin back off and finished spot welding those tailgate braces into position.

All in all, very, very happy with the way it went. Took an entire day to do, but at least it's done and done right. No more bent up metal full of 3/4" of bondo.

Took a pic of the tailgate skin just sitting in the opening. It isn't attached yet to the tailgate, just want to see how it looked like and make sure everything fit.
My body man buddy is going to be in town on Tuesday and said he could bring some panel skinning tools he uses, I think I'm going to take him up on that :)

Probably move back to the roof on Sunday night or Monday, since I have the day off of work. Going to the lake tomorrow to go jet sking so probably no LV work.
