35" tires are hardcore?

That trohpy truck statement is stretchin it. My rig is simular to a KOH type of rig, not a trophy truck. If hes building abudget minded somewhat normal rig (not a custom/hardcore) why is he asking for advice in the hardcore corner?

He asked this in the hardcore section, so I assumed he was after hardcore advice not justification to run a cheap heavy huge pig.

If you are a broke ass noob with a mud rig then a 14 bolt is fine.

No hate, just pointing out another option.

I dont want a huge diff with not many gear choices, that weighs over a 1/4 ton.

My son posted in the 40 thread first and got no response, figured someone helpful would pick it up in the hardcore. If your calling a 20 year old kid a "broke ass noob" you got an issue - ever heard of encouragement? Passing knowledge along? Appreciate the help!

personally if i was going away from yota axles and had tires smaller than 42's and felt like the 14 bolt clearance was going to be bad then i'd rather use a ford 9" over a 60

The problem with a ford 9" is the housing. If you are going to opt for one of the Bling housings, then you'll be good. But a factory housing is not up to the task. unless you weld about 300lbs of metal to it..

I am a fan of the 9" tho.

no biggie....hell that's what we do to toyota housings

This thread just shows why i won't ask any questions here. I love the info that can be found, but i think it can confuse as much as it can help.

So, what are you confused about?

Too much B.S. over a 14 bolt.
but thanks for asking.....

I'm missing the BS.

There was an honest discussion about the merits/downfalls about a 14 bolt.

It is the Gold Standard of wrecking yard axles and you will still have money left over. If the ground clearance bothers you, shave it. I'd take it any day simply because it is crazy strong and easy on the wallet. Is there something more important that those two factors? I have yet to meet any woman impressed by anybody's choice of rear axle hardware so it can't be that...

I went with the semi floater 14b because its all I really need, its stronger that the LC axle, I needed a centered rear and it comes with six lug shafts. Eaton also makes an E-locker for it which I have been really enjoying.

I agree that a 14 bolt is great for the money and very easy to find.. just seemed to me that the discussion got overly opinionated about something that is a pretty simple choice to me. When i swap the BBC into my 60 in the fall i will be installing one.

you must not be dating the right women...:p

sorry if i offended anybody with my sarcasm...

Its a common theme in forums that everybody wants to help you spend spend money you don't have. So you get left field responses that, while cool, are not realistic finacially.

14B

Good write up!
Heavy, strong, availble,full floating, cheap.
Did I miss anything.
Looks like my SOA will have too wait until I can
get the 14B ready...
thanks RAMZ...

I ran a 14 bolt in my FJ40/buggy with 42s, and got hung on it a lot. I will take that as a trade-off to not having to worry about breaking a rear pinion or axle shaft any day!

With that being said, I am preparing to do the Ballistic Fab shave kit while it's out to be swapped onto the new buggy. Gaining 2" of clearance should be a huge improvement. My buddy got hung on the 14 bolt in his buggy with 42s at least a half dozen times in two days at Harlan last month...

For the money, you cant beat the strength and reliability of a 14 bolt!

but on a tech related note, Im going to look at a couple of 14B's here locally and at one point in time I came across something that told you the year and the gears it came with ect using the numbers on the housing, but for the life of me I cannot find it again! It isnt on or linked to the 14B info page on pirate either.
