I checked my fuel economy (1988 BJ71 / 13B-T) and was a little disappointed that I only averaged approximately 23 mpg. Is this fuel economy in the normal range?
Thanks......1978HJ45

That is 23mpg in American gallons. Nothing to be dissapointed about!

Sounds about right. If you are running winter diesel it might get a bit better when you are on summer fuel. We are talking about a 4500lb vehicle with worse aerodynamics than a garden shed... ;)

Come to think of it, my garden shed does have a sloping roof which I guess would be somewhat aerodynamic.

My BJ75 has a slight sloping roof

23MPG in US gallons is 9.7 K/liter which is about right - doing 90k or lessa nd it will scoot over 10k a liter. Your BJ71 is lighter than my BJ75. YOu also never said how fast you cruise at.

I get 8.5 k/liter towing a HEEP Wrangler for 400k hahahaha.

I am one of those people who goes relatively slow ( I like to irritate the people behind me:)) so 80 to 90 kph is about average. I do however have 33" tires so I really am clueless as to my actual speed.

I found that when I put 235/85-16 tires on my speedo was almost exact (by GPS) but my odometer was off by 14%. I believe my tires are 31.7"

I can't believe you sold your LJ - did Wayne buy it? ;)

I am currently running 33X12.50R15 tires which I assume would make the speedometer read low.
Despite Wayne's constant begging I refused to sell him the LJ78 just as a matter of principle.:):)

Your speedo and odometer are connected so one can't be right and the other out by 14%. When I had 33" tires the speedo and mileage was 14% too low

The speedo and odometer are connected, but the odo is gear driven directly off the cable and the speedo needle is driven by magnetic force acting against a spring (to return it to zero). It is entirely possible for them to read differently... and that is often the case, but it's usually only a few % difference at any given speed.

I think you should check your speedo and odo a little more carefully against your GPS readings.

Good advice John, but it's been checked many times with different tires. Stock size (ish) the odo is almost bang on while the speedo is reading high. Back in the day, Japanese motorcycles were notorious for "optimistic" speedos - 10% was not uncommon. Now after 260,000km it's possible that things are even further out.

I think it's likely that any manufacturer would not want the odo reading low - essentially extending any warrant period. Still, 14% is a crazy discrepancy...

Weak magnets in the speedo?

My truck: 85 BJ70 with stock gearing, 33x10.5r15 tires and 3.5" lift, my truck speedometer read 13% low at 100 km/h when compared to my handheld GPS.....

Let me make sure I have this right ( math was never my strong point).
With 33X12.50R15 tires installed and the speedometer reading 85 kms
I am actually averaging roughly 96 kms. (+13%)

I have 33x10's on mine. When I was heading down the highway doing 100 km/h (indicated on the factory speedometer), my handheld GPS indicated that I was doing 113 km/h.....

Wow its kinda cool being a "speed demon" in my BJ71.:D I actually passed a fully laden log truck the other day. That was never an option in my previous Cruisers.
