I drove my neighbour's 1993 (I think) KZJ77 yesterday and noticed a red light on the bottom right of the tachometer with an engine symbol (check engine light), opposite the green turbo light.

This vehicle does not have an ECU or as far as I can see, any sort of diagnostic port, so it's not clear what this check engine light is. Is it indicating a turbo fault? (or maybe a turbo pressure sensor fault)?

He says the light has always been on during the 5 years or so that he has had the vehicle.

Thanks

Most Series 70s with a 1KZ engine have an ECU from the factory.

Do you have an "idle up" switch? If so, it's with an ECU, it's that simple.

It's even simpler if you read the title, it's a 1KZ-T not -TE.

it might indeed be a turbo fault.

it can also blink occasionally when the rpm is high and the turbo is pushed and that is normal behaviour.

was the red light always on during the drive or it came on occasionally?

The light is on continuously while the ignition s on, no blinking.

Thanks. As I understand it, for the turbo lights there would be two pressure switches - one activated when the turbo comes on boost (green light, working). The second would be an overboost switch when the turbo exceeds a certain pressure (red light). Clearly there is a fault as it comes on as soon as the engine is started. I'll take a look at the switches next time I catch him.

If the 1KZ-T is similar to the 2L-T then the red light is just there for overboost. Given that it comes on as soon as the ignition is on then I would suspect either the sensor or wiring. It might also be triggered by a failing alternator, but that would coincide with the charge light coming on as well.
