I searched EVERYWHERE for a recent thread on factory fuel tank capacities w/o luck. Can I really be this stupid? Anyway I can't recall the actual capacities being argued, but it seemed odd the capacities being tossed around. Did some 40's come with a 13 (or close) gallon tank? I can fill it until I see fuel in the neck (13 gallons) and the gauge works fine. I can run it dry and still on fill-up... 13 gallons. Anyone? Pimp?
Thanks
-Dom

stock was 16 gallons, then it went to 22 gallons in 79 or 81.....I forget

I think they claim 18 gallons before 72? Might be imperial gallons though. 16.4gallons from 72-78 and like Pimp says, 22 later.

Not sure why I would only get 13 gallons with a dry tank and fuel showing at the fill tube. I replaced my old original tank (13 gallons too) with a Toyota Factory replacement. Anyone have an idea of what the hell is going on? Pimp do you have a '73 owners manual with specifications page?

73 US broucure shows 18 gals, 75 shows 16.......odd

nothing in the OM

My TLC owners manual reprint from SOR shows, for 1972, 18.5 gallons for hardtop, 23.8 for station wagon.

There is probably 4 kilos of Cocaine in your tank, that would acount for the diminished capacity of petrol.

My guage must be off. I've been filling up with 13 gallons for the last 3 years and was recently heard that it was a 16 gallon tank. So sure enough I ran it dry (had a 2 gallon can with me) and filled up with 16.3 gallons. I feel like a dumbass.

Back Ground check on the PO might be in order. After all Baja Mex. Is a nice drive South from San Diego! (Made that run a few times… but for surfing!)

1 Gallon = 231 cubic inches So a five gallon difference is 1155 cubic inches sucking up space. There would have to be something quite large in the tank to do this. (Like a 5.25”x 21”x 10.5” block inside the tank) I would pull the tank and take a good look at it. The PO may have had a leak “fixed” in the past by cooking out the tank and having a section sealed off. Only thing I can think off as to why it would be different. Unless its not an OE tank. Photo of it?

I replaced the old original tank with a Toyota Factory replacement so it must be 18 gallons. Not sure whats going on but I'm going to run it dry tomorrow and then fill up. I'm sure I had done this but I guess I am wrong. Thanks for all the input. I sold my old tank to RockCod so I'll have to ask him to check for the brick of coke...

I know that when I was on walk with my '69, that it will take 17 gallons...

Same with my '72-40.

I now have a 16 gallon tank in the red truck, and when it is on walk, it will take 15...

Good luck!
