first off a disclaimer:
just because it has worked for me and a number of others does NOT mean it will work for you. ONLY do this if the winch or your budget allows.
next disclaimer:
SEVERE INJURY CAN RESULT IF YOU SCREW UP AND GET YOUR HAND, ARM, CLOTHING caught in the returning cable. KEEP AWAY FROM PINCH ZONE.

so why do it?
extremely fast
extremely strong pull
12V winches are cheaper than 24V and easier to find in good used condition.

i have been running 12V 8274 winches on 24V now for years. i have put the winch though long very hard pulls, long easy pulls, short hard pulls and never an issue. ... well ... till recently.
i had the winch installed on a PZJ70 which is 24V, worked great, saved my ass many times but then i installed it back on a 12V truck and after one pull it died. i took the winch off and stuck it on the shelf to ... someday ... tear it down and see what was wrong. well, the other day i decided to send it in to see if i could get a exchange motor and the shop called me back, winch is repaired. $70.
what?
yah, you had it immersed in water and it needed cleaning and new brushes.

so, for those of you that want a VERY STRONG, VERY FAST recovery winch that doesn't kill your battery in use then this is my suggestion (with disclaimers attached)

now, what is it like to use this winch?

you will be running when you unwheel it under power.
you will be running when you free line it back in under power.
your truck will come out like it is on a greased rail.

but

the last 9 ft of cable will come in extremely fast so caution must be used. i am talking faster than you can react to.
pinch the hook with 2 fingers on the OUTSIDE of the hook NEVER around the hook or make sure you have a tournique handy and someplace very cold to store your severed finger or hand. I AM SERIOUS, it is DANGEROUS. use the blurp method for free load winching.

also, when winching a stuck truck ... stay back. there is a crap load of stress on that cable with a ton of power on tap. if that cable breaks then there is a good chance someone could get hurt. if it sounds unusual then stop and take a close look at the situation, is there an easier or safer way of extraction the stuck vehicle? pulling sideways to break the diffs free? winching up? winching forward or back? jacking the vehicle up and sticking a couple real long logs under the diffs as slides? think it through, just because you have the power doesn't take common sense out of the equation.

maybe i will take a vidoe comparrision of 3 different winches to give an idea of the resulting performance gain ... then again maybe not.

cheers

Videos please, that sounds badass!
