As niffa said, each to their own. My 12h-t is stock, 200k km on it. I think they produce plenty of power.
I want mine to run another 25 years. But sure if you have it apart why not beef it up a bit.
Good luck with it.

Guys not trying to be negative here, but do you have photos of your HJ61 hitting over 20psi, at 15 psi mine is ringing it's neck and prior to that it's fxxxen awesome :p

Yep definitely in dark ages, I've only been a spanner for over 10 years and worked sprint cars most of that time.

I'm currently driving the new td ranger for work and I was having lag problems so they put a gauge on it at ford service and it was maxing out at 18psi with a typical pressure of about 5-7psi.

I fitted a GT35 to a hilux not long back with a boost gauge and with the waste gate fully open it was bouncing at 28 pound and breathing real heavy.

All I'm saying is the motor is not designed for it and there is no real point to doing it so why even bother, you are not driving a light weight tuned performance vehicle.
The best you can hope for is 20% more power and the worst that can happen is writing off your motor. I know what I would prefer.

Sure, can make s little mobilephone video for you :)

Crock60: not sure what engine your 4s is but it sounds like you compare petrol and diesel engines here. That's like comparing oranges and apples ...
Diesels are build much more massively from the grounds up due to massive compression numbers that a diesel run and your old sluggish V8 will hide in the dark in embarrasment, it will be a lit slower than a tuned diesel, even an old 12ht will out perform it when tuned :)
Oh and we are running a Toyota 5SGTE at about 1.6bar producing around 500hp running 85% ethanol in a Celica gt4. Not impossible :)
Enough of topic from my side, but hate to see so much misunderstand of how diesel boost work. Running low boost and rich will kill it any day. Running high boost, running it lean will make it last a long time :)

Pretty sure dougal and other diesel turbo experts will agree with me here :)

On a diesel aiming for twice the power is not unrealistic, especially if it is naturally aspirated from factory :)

Yep now I'm being lectured on my first trade.
Nothing wrong with doubling the power....we're definitely worlds apart here.

It is a difference between "lets double the power, it's so easy" and not unrealistic. For doubling you would ofcourse need to modify you engine. New and bigger turbo, might need a bigger fuel pump and so on.
But then again I'm talking older diesels with much headroom. The new diesels are so maximised from factory there are a lot less headroom to play with, but then again they are more than able to perform good at stock. The 2AD-FHV is a good example here. Runs pretty darn good from factory.

Hey
Hey Rookie, all HJ61's are interesting, there's a couple of ways to put up pics, the easiest being when you are replying to a post hit the attach button and simply attach a photo in a thumbnail or full picture, or there's photobucket.com

So are you getting 20 psi on a boost gauge, once I go over 15 psi the over boost light comes on so I back off.

I agree Spudman, thanks for the heads up!

The red light in your tacho is just precaution, the ct26 turbo and standard pump tune (ie...letting the boost compensater do its thing) is
good for 14.6 psi, after this the red light comes on. My red light is on all the time as mine sits on 15 to 17 psi at 100klm/hr.

Now we are getting somewhere...

Alfin pistons are the go hey!!!

Piston and rings + gudgeon pins and bearings were my main concern, we all know the 12ht rings were prone to failure
at an age + higher boost and more fuel!

Ive got 2 12ht engines at my shed with destroyed rings, one motor is stock with 586,000 klms on it, the other only has 230,000
but the young fella had the fuel all the way up with a standard ct26....was blowing black fat out the pipe as soon as he touched the pedal
(had the off boost fuel turned up aswell) and i learnt the hard way playing with that one lol.

So while we are going, anyone know of good bearings and gudgeons etc.

Cheers for your input fella's

Well thats my old girl anyways, she will look like that again soon. Probably at its cleanest in that pic.

She handled good mate, tuff dog 51mm big bore adjustables in the front and pro comp in the rear.
