I pulled the injectors today. Glad I did, looks like they've been in there a long time. Some of the heater hoses have seen better days so I'll be replacing those before reassembling everything. I also saw a lot of oil in the turbo pipe so will be pulling the turbo for a rebuild.

The head bolts around the injectors are looking a little crusty. Should I do anything about this? Fluid film them to prevent additional rusting?

Thank you for the recommendation! My turbo and injectors are on their way to JH Hilux. Dropped off the box at UPS this morning.

Its a smaller world now!

Your 12HT is going to love fresh injectors and a turbo. How's the rest of the engine, especially the cooling system? Whilst you're waiting for the return from JH Hilux have you got some other tasks to go on with?

Some of the heater hoses had deep indentations from the clamps and were pretty gunky inside. So I ordered a new heater hose kit.

Anything else with the cooling system you'd recommend? I replaced the thermostat a few months ago. The radiator is original but seems to work fine.

Looking to address failure points preemptively, as much as possible.

  • The radiator wont be far off failing if its original! Its crazy how good the factory radiators were, I barely get 10years out of a good copper/brass one now but the factory ones were good for 20-30 years. I'd really consider pre-emptively replacing the radiator with a new brass/copper one
  • I'd do an aggressive flush of the engine and heater core (dont forget the rear heater core if its still in place).
  • I'd also look at the viscous fan hub - disassembly and refill with the Toyota silicone oil - or just replace.
  • If the water pump hasn't been done in living memory I'd 100% go ahead and just replace it.
  • Don't forget the little bypass hose between the thermostat housing and the water pump housing.
  • You may find the coolant outlets at the back of the cylinder head that feed the heater core are badly corroded - consider replacing them if inspection shows them corroded.
When its all done, I'd also fit an Engine Guard or similar - a two probe temperate monitor with audible alarms at your chosen set point. I have a probe on the Thermostat Housing Cover and the second one on the rear of the head.

Wow, thank you! This is fantastic advice. I just ordered an Engine Guard. Seems like good insurance driving a 37 year old rig.

I'm a decent mechanic but I get nervous having so much diassembled at once. Might wait to have the turbo and injectors reinstalled, and go for a test drive before I dive into the cooling system too much. For the radiator - do you think a copper/brass replacement is better than having a radiator shop re-core the factory rqdiator?

Will order a fan clutch and water pump, and take a look at the coolant outlets.

BTW the turbo and injectors are already in Australia. Landed in Sydney 12 hours ago and are making progress towards Garbutt.

If you can find someone to recore the factory one I'd definitely go that route - the original tanks are made of much thicker brass than the currently available aftermarket units!
