i have decided to change the power plant and transmission of my 1981 hj 47, it currently has a 2h with 4 speed transmission. i was thinking of a 12ht with a 5 speed, because it will bolt right in. a friend today suggested a 6bt or maybe a 4bt cummins. one reason beside the reliability of the engine is the cost. i know that there are a lot of information on the forum about the 4bt conversion, what about the 6bt. will the 4bt or the 6bt bolt right into the toyota 5 speed transmission or do i need to go to another transmission. what is the mpg. my cruiser is heavy see picture below. love my 2h but, there just don't seem to have enough horses on it. reliability is still most important for me. pls direct me to the information or i am interested to know what you think. since i have decided to change power plant i figure i should explore the possibilities and put the question before the forum.

I would go with the 12HT ,1HZ or 13BT. The others would be difficult for parts outside the US and explaining to people it has had an engine swap on the phone is frustrating.

The 12HT is the easiest to bolt up,but get the 5sp with it. In 5th gear at 2200 it will be in its ideal rpm range and that will be around 60mph.
Realistically ,with all the camper gear up top, achieving 17-20 mpg will be the best you can hope for
The toyota diesels are also quiet which is ideal for long trips.

Download the free image resizer from MS and choose the smallest setting to resize the pic then upload to mud

why not put a turbo on the 2H? You can also add a 5 speed to your existing 2H

i thought about that but, the cost is very close and would rather go all the way, my 2h has many mialege and would have to rebuild it if i was to put a turbo on it. plus i need to put a ps and an air conditioning on it, i am thinking i need to a power plant that i can build around....thanks

also i will take down the photo till i figure out how to resize it..thanks again

I love the 2H engine .. but if you have any chance to get a 12H-T ( close to the best turbo diesel engine that I ever seen ) go for it ..

1981 2h engines

i am told there is a difference between 2h engine made before 1985 and those made after 1985. since my 2h is 1981 i am told that the piston are sprayed with oil, therefore ideal for turbo conversion, does anyone knows about the difference, between this engines? is this true?

There are few diferences like head gasket, sleeve vs non sleeve block, exhaust manifold .. and few others ..

I don't think that any 2H have piston squirt cooling ..

x2 the parts manual only shows the squirters on the 12HT AFAIK

The info on here is for an Isuzu 4BD1T, this is not the same engine as the cummins 4BT but is a similar layout (similar capacity, both 4 cyls etc).

It'd be probably four times quicker and easier to fit a toyota engine in than anything else.

Have you heard of the 1HZ-T?:grinpimp:

have not heard of the 1hz-t, i have only heard of the 1hz, no turbo. i have heard of the 1hdt, i am looking into the 1hdt if the price is right it may be the way to go... sorry about the big picture in the beginning of the tread, i cannot figure out how to take it out.

E-mail irongiant, he is in the process of importing a 1HZ, he is a wealth of info on JDM engines and trans.

One of the things that needs to be considered is the Japanese diesels are all 24 volt and the Australian diesels are 12v.
Rideglobally's HJ45 is 12v.
I suppose a JDM 1HD T would be simple enough to convert to 12V by obtaining a 12V starter and alternator.
Im not too sure about the glowplugs, temp and oil sensors but they are cheap to change over

The 1HZ-T is the sasquatch of toyota engines. Pictures and catalogue references exist but the board members get rapidly divided over whether it really exists or not.

inter cooling a 12ht

i could not find a tread on inter cooling a 12ht. what are the gain in power? what are the other benefit ie, mpg. i weight my cruiser today it is 7500lbs, i think when i am done building, it will be between 9000 to 10,000 fully loaded. given this weight, what do you think is the best engine. do you think an inter cooled 12ht would be enough power? 12ht would be the easiest of all the possible conversion. your thoughts.......:steer::bang:

Im sorry but I think you will be grossly overloaded. I dont know what the american laws allow ,but here, the GVM would be 6700lb

hmmmmmm......

With that weight... I would say Chevy Duramax:D

Take a look at this thread:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/202444-intercooler-egt-nuumbers.html

"Enough" power is very subjective. Some people aren't happy with a 300hp sports car.

Make me smile .. but it's true ..

I thought ( and it's bassed on my personal opinion ) that a properly tuned 12H-T with a proper fitted intercooler it's a very capable engine that allow you to move with your cruiser to any place ..

Sure if you are moving 10k pounds of stuff 33" or 35" tires with an auto tranny and 3.70 R&P .. you gonna feel that the 12H-T are not enought ..

Edit: sure with that weight you will end with other propblems as your rear axle ( FF . ? ) and your braking power.

Speaking from experience the 2H will be a dog up hills. Then the MPGs go down. I say drive it as is and get a feel for it. Then upgrade to your liking.

2H and 12H-T are 2 totally diferent beast ..
