Yeah I've been thinking about that, the steel wool should not get rusty as it's in an oil vapour bath.
Maybe change the steel wool at service time with the oil?
I don't think a paper one would last long, block up mabey...

One option I was thinking about was the big steel wool catch can like I've got, then put another filter inline, probably a small paper flavoured one as a back up just to catch anything from the can as the oil should hopefully be removed from the vapour..... That was as far as I got this morning when I was thinking about it :-)

I've just read over this thread again, when it look at your catch can it has that tube on the side, can you explain what that is for.

So is the catch can as simple as running a hose from the breather, through a filter and then a hose coming out of the filter and fits back where the breather hose connects.

If so would it be possible to use something like a diesel fuel pump with the filter attached, would that work or am I way out left field.

Thanks

Spudman

The tube on the side is a sight glass to see if it's getting full!
Your spot on with your assumption, breather/filter/pipe back to intake.
I suppose you could use a fuel filter and the housing, as long as it isn't restrictive and cannot siphon anything in the bottom, some kind of filter with a "sump" would be good.
I'm sure someone has done it

Check that one out, mine cost me about 60 bucks all up

I reckon spuds on the money here, get a z9 housing from an old dunny door and jimmy it up so you can plump an in and out line.
That way you've got a great cheap oil filter as a catch can that you can change whenever you like.

Umm might have a look at making something up when I get back, thanks guys

Wow, that Mishimoto is sure a piece of work! But at $325 I see you are way smarter than the guy that bought one of those ;)
It has quite a small cone-type filter by the looks. Might be worth looking into just that filter to see what it is, and then working
around it. Thanks to Shaun, great help

If you guys come across other good ideas post them here get a decent thread going, I'll put running reports up and amount of oil collected, although I'm not driving it much this winter, rust repair time:-!

I did see that Mishimoto has a cheaper catch can for $115. Most coolant containers are in that range now. Seems like $100 isn't a lot any more.
My intention is to create one out of easily available parts and then lay it out for any one to copy. My version will have the LH drive to deal with as yours is RHD, so the available space varies, but will have to find a way to be universal, as in Canada we have both. It will be late June before I get to it.

I got an email back from Mishimoto, and the filter is a 40 micron bronze filter. Of which they do not sell separately
or as a replacement. So using your $37 ( cheap! ) can, I would look for a filter matching those specs.
I think I will see about getting this one, I'll talk to a couple of other guys and maybe order a bundle.

Shaun

Did you also block off the EGR or do we not have that setup, most other catch can setups state you should block of the EGR

The 12HT did not have an EGR system either.

They started to appear around 1990 from what I can tell.

I just found the answer, we don't have an EGR

That looks bloody good spud:-) nice big inlet/outlet
How bad are those blocked manifold pics..... Ugly....

Please buy it and do a review, I've saved that one and will consider swapping my out down the track:-)

Ok, yep I purchased one and will do a review/write up, unfortunately it won't be for 3-4 weeks as I'm in Bali till the 6th June
