In comparing my GX to my Dad's 4th Gen 4Runner they are pretty much identical from the frame down. Even which holes in the frame are threaded and which are not. The GX does have some suspension differences in the shocks and springs that we all know about.

This is the first time I REALLY wheeled the GX. Having a locking dif is still so much nicer than just ATRAC. You just can't crawl really slow with ATRAC and that's how you avoid damage. Comparing like for like, the GX seems to have better departure angle than the 3rd Gen 4Runner which had a long butt. Eventually enough lift makes departure angle less important as the rear is just higher than the obstacle. In Moab though there are lots of long tight ascents and a couple of times the FJC with aftermarket bumpers would hit where I didn't. Possibly I actually had a bit more lift as I could cheat and raise the rear suspension in addition to my normal lift but they had 33's and I have 32's. There were no stock height FJCs; they had lifts too. Maybe those after market bumpers hang low or sag the truck too much.

In either case I didn't take the GX on Golden Spike as I knew I would be hitting everywhere on the bumpers even with the frame receiver hitch to help fend things off. Low hanging armour trumps high hanging plastic. LOL My wife would have killed me. Instead I traded off driving my friends '85 4Runner with dual elockers and dual xfer cases. Walk in the park for that trail. The FJCs did really well too though. It's cool that they come elocked.

Here's a fun pic of my old truck on Golden Spike. It was locked front and rear on 33s.

Copan, the FJC steelies look awesome on your truck. Nice build!

Thank you! We are very happy with the performance so far. We have several things to still add, but we are nearing the end of the build I think, then on to focus on the expo trailer build. :D

Still toying with FJ steelies vs the Lexus AL wheels powder coated black. I know you can pound a steelie back to normal if you bang it up...but I still like the stock wheels.

Your picture is making it a harder decision, they look really good!!

Thanks! That's exactly why we went with them. I didn't even worry about them while we were on the trail!

My first GX and my first post...

Well, I'm excited for the new toy. Just picked up a '04 GX with 53K. Drove it from CT to VA and it drives like new...love Lexus! My last rig was a rover and we all know how those drive. Anyway, I'm attaching my first pic of the GX and two of the old rover to give you an idea of my future mods, some of which are already being shipped to my door!

Recently put on one size larger Mud Terrain's and the running boards had to go. Plan to do a locker next and better skid's. Took it off-road recently and broke in the paint job:whoops:. Good thing scratches are not noticable from a distance.

What size tires are those?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the family here, although my family have been building cruisers for years. Luckily, my awesome brothers work at a dealership and the helped me get my 05 4runner (93k miles). I love it to death and have been hitting the local trails hard while doing my research on what to do with my new baby. It's a pleasure to meet everyone and hope to get a lot of positive feedback on my build in the future!

Thanks dude! I got the 4.0 6 cylinder. She's a healthy girl, lots of power. As far as what I'm wanting to do, a small lift, maybe 2.5 inches with possibly a 1inch spacer lift? along with, a more aggressive set of wheels and tires because my stock ones are giving me a hard time. Also was checking out those sweet roof rack set ups with the pop up rent. I've always loves those and I would like to go with a "rugged survival" look with my runner. Along with a more aggressive front bumper with a winch! Anyways if you have input or ideas, I'm all ears :)
