Hi all,

Recent convert from Nissan to Toyota here (and loving it) hoping to get some general info/help with my H/L shifter on a 1999 105 Series that I’m still learning my way around.

I can’t seem to shift the stick from its current position (which I think is High) to anywhere else.

I have tried changing it in Neutral, Park, moving the car then stopping and trying, etc - is it potentially jammed or I’m missing something?

Would also love to know how this system works, is the car always in ‘4WD mode’ or do I need to be able to shift this gearstick? I know that the central diff lock button can also be engaged, which is working when pressed.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Hello, I’m investigating this issue as well. From my understanding it’s from a lack of use by PO. Here’s a link

In the 100 series/LX with the auto trans, everyday driving is done with the t-case shifter in H (“4 high”). So yes, you are always in 4wd with this setup. ( A partial explanation for the terrible gas mileage. )

Standard procedure to shift the t-case into L (“4 low”) is to put the auto transmission into neutral, and then shift the t-case into L. (This is not to be confused with the “L” position on the transmission, below 2).

If the previous owner of your 105 rarely (or never) used L / 4 Low, there’s a good chance the linkage is bound, as suggested in the post above ^.

Thank you both! Very helpful, appreciate it.
