$1000 for the 80. Where do I start?

I agree with the baselining shocks and camping/comfort mods first. Its an incredibly capable vehicle sans lift. However

If time money and space allow...

Triple your budget :)
Buy clittle90 's 80.

Sell drivetrain to rice
Sell rear bumper to erymer
Sell Aussie locker
Sell sliders to someone (welded)
Sell your wheels n tires

Install lift and tires and part out the rest till you have a hulk of scrap and drag that to the yard for .13 a lb.

Back down to under 1000 but more time and effort.
That is what i have been doing and it worked for me. Wise man jason

You have to be careful. You may end up like me with too many trucks ;-)

Only problem with that plan is space. If I had the room I'd still have the porsche, the 40, and the tacoma. I still would have sold the wive's sentra though for full disclosure. That thing sucked.
I have no issues with used equipment if I find it. Base lining the fluids has been done so that is taken care of, although it is time for an oil change again already. Any spare parts people recommend having handy?
Does Stan do roof racks? That would definitely upgrade my storage space for trips and I really want to get the spare out from underneath the truck.
It's tough to look cooler than a snorkel. That means your legit right?
Also, what is funny with these responses is that most of you who responded have lifted trucks :-) Just sayin'.
Sliders with a step functionality are a definite must for the child and the wife eventually.
I'm going to try and put my thoughts together and come up with a list of desired mods for both the first and second kind of cool. Then we can talk about priorities.
Again, excellent conversation and thanks for everyone's continued input.

Or you may end up with one that is of no use to you. Doh. you can have mine for free but ya gotta come get it :D

Careful of your pic but it can work in your favor and clittle's could possibly work depending. but I completely understand the space thing. I'd be dangerous with space and 2 nickels

Below is a list of mods I would like to do in no particular order. I really like the Gamviti custom expo racks. But I've just started researching those. The bumpers/sliders would be done locally. I have some ideas and photos of what I would like. I don't know jack about winches. ARB fridge seems to be the only real option. I like the Yaesu FT-817ND for comms. I'm not really interested in GPS/ARPS because, frankly, I don't want to be tracked. My immediate goal is to have something I can take on trips like the Black Balsam/Portsmouth Island trip with the family. Tire recommendations are welcome also. Current tread is 90+% so it isn't an immediate need. I know 33" will fit on the stock height and I think I want to stay at 33" to minimize the rolling resistance. Even with 2.5" of lift I think 35"s will just fit/look better though so who knows. I have already discovered the hive of scum and villiany that exists on the 33/35 gear change arguments. I like the OME 2.5" lift kits. Storage system will be self made. I really like the Goal Zero product line and may roll something like that into a second battery to power the fridge, etc. I haven't done any research into upgrading the stock lighting yet. Links to any information is appreciated. These vehicles are like underwear. We like what we like and everyone has a different opinion. The end goal is of course a truck that should be able to go anywhere in America. I have very little desire to ever do rock crawling. So what does everyone think on priorities? Since 33"s will fit on the stock height I am thinking about bumping the roof rack before the lift for the added space. But as mentioned, weight is a concern. Also, sliders make me happy. Not sure why. But it helps people get into and out of the truck. I've also discovered SE Overlands Oh Crap handle straps and I really like those. Anyone have any experience with them?

I wouldn't say arb is only fridge option. Have a reason for not liking the others. Engel and???? Not norcold but -----

Sounds like your a new equip kinda of guy though or granted it is hard to find exactly what you want used. That's where compromise and budget compete

As a cheap bastid I'd be looking for a workable rack for under 500. A iron pig skid. And a HF winch on a reciever cradle for first round. And yes probably stretching the budget but we won't tell the wife if you don't.

Storage. Protection and recovery to start

Besides if you roll up to expo with half that crap and 35s they will mock you :P

And 33's will suit you well and look fine stock or on 2.5" lift

Oh and snorkels are really best at encouraging stupid looks and questions. If only you had a moonglow 80 ;)

I have difficulty finding what I want used. I can get a gamviti exactly how I want it for a couple hundred more dollars (875$ unpainted). That is not a small amount of money but if I look at my rack and wish I had spent a couple extra hundred bucks every time then it is worth it for me. The Comms is another area where this is apparent. The radio I want new is 650$. Used you can find them around 550$. But then you have to add in shipping and the fear that it doesn't work. Worth the extra 100$ IMO. The problem with putting storage before the roof rack is that I lose the back end of the 80 without a place to put bigger things, like rifles cases and bags without impacting vision. I think the rack needs to come before anything goes inside (Storage/fridge). Bumpers can go pretty far down the list, or as an item when I smash my bumpers. I got stuck in HI once and had to wait for a couple hours until someone with a winch came along. It is a really nice thing to have for peace of mind. But a new front bumper comes before the winch of course.
Can someone make me a powerpoint presentation, color schematics, engineering diagrams, and a cup of coffee and have it all on my desk in 30 minutes? Thanks :) I don't think there is a right opinion I'm just curious what people think. I have always backpacked so car camping is kind of a new thing for me.

**EDIT** ARB fridges are really the only ones I've seen. I have no preference. If you can link other options that would be great. Yeah, were going to need you to work on Saturday. Thanks.

I took my list and tried to give it some thought in how things would play out. (I love slow nights at work) I made four "groups" of items that could be done concurrently or in any order. Below is what I came up with. I've scratched the snorkel from the list unless I head West. There is a flat baja rack in Charlottesville VA for sale right now for 500$ but I'm going to try and call Stan and see what his schedule looks like and if he is even interested in doing something like a rack.

Group 1:
Lift
Tires
Sliders

Group 2:
Roof Rack
Storage System
2nd Battery
Fridge

Group 3:
Front Bumper
Winch
Rear Bumper

Group 4: (Any order/Good BDay, Xmas Gifts)
Gear (Shovel/Axe)
Comms
Under Armor
Lighting
Solar Equipment

I was referring to the rack as storage in my post. Skid as protection. Winch as recovery

Maybe point was lost with so few words used :D

If that BajaRack is in decent shape with mounts, I'll give you $400 and my safari rack for it :) There ya go! $100 rack! You'd need to weld a few mounts on to the safari rack - I don't think your 80 has a stock roof rack, no?

By the way, I think you have your groups sorted in good order. Group 1 is exactly what I was told before going to Uwharrie last year... My truck was stock at the time. Since it's not strictly a wheeler, or it wasn't intended to be, I was concerned about appearance. Even with 25% tread remaining on AT's, Brock insisted on sliders first then tires. Incidentally, I got them both but wheeled unlocked with stock lift. When I returned to Uwharrie this year, the lift made a big difference on the trails. Still, I would have gone with lockers before a lift, but you don't have that concern - which is a tremendously good thing! Since you already have camping gear that works for you, I think your priorities are good and it will come down to availability. Like, if you get a good deal on a bumper or skids, just jump on them. Buy the misc camping gear as you figure out the stuff you have doesn't suit your needs.

Another piece of advice is spend quite a long day reading up on expedition portal...... see alternatives to $$$$ brands. Goal Zero is a great brand but very pricey if your budget is small. There are many cheaper alternatives and many threads on it over there and how people put their own solar packs together. If you have your heart set on goal zero don't let me deter you though they are a great company and their product is solid. If I had more $$$ I would buy their products in a heartbeat. :)

Wild Yoats has a pretty good way to build your own rack for pretty dang cheap

http://www.wildyoats.com/

Jason's plan right there is a pretty good one and pretty straight forward... you would have to increase your $1000 just a bit to do it.

But a rack for around $500, a cheap winch like HF or smittybuilt (both of which get great reviews) and s skid (either one of slees, IPOR, BIOR etc) would be a great start and give you quite a bit more room for storage, protection to vital driveline parts and self recovery.

to pile on a bit ....

I think your order is right on as I have always advised the first priority should be a three way tie for protection (skids / sliders), recovery equipment, traction (via better tires) and if the budget still allowed, a moderate lift, even if it is merely spring spacers on a coil sprung rig ...

I am on board with your plan as well. It is hard to build a truck on a budget and not second guess yourself. What makes it hard for me is to decide on what I think I wand to do and what I will actually wind up doing. I do not think buying Clittle90's truck is a good plan, maybe if he will take a reasonable price but he is way over priced.

Values on 80s are on the rise but there is a drastic difference between a running, drive-able 80 and even a built rig with a blown motor or trans. I buy 60s and 80s with blown motor and or trans for no more than $1K at this point, with items like lifts, tires etc. There are several 80s available currently with blown motor or trans, just depends on what you want off them. Good luck with your build.

Just a thought. My tires are 295/75/16. My lift is average. I'm 6' tall. I still use my sliders (SLEE, but others are also great) as a step every time I get in. The wife is 5'2.75" (she counts as much as she can) and definitely uses them as steps. Point being that lift/tires/sliders might go together for a very $$$ purchase. Plus, you might want to consider a slider with a plate or mesh that fills the gap to prevent a foot from getting ripped off, since your kid'll be scrambling over it. @NCFJ made some for @erymer a few years back.
John is correct. If you check the link in my sig you can see Stan's handywork. A kickout on my sliders was a must have and he convinced me to add the expanded metal on top. I would never forgive myself had one of my precious's got hurt because I didn't do it right. Stan really does super work and he's a great guy to boot. I had a gift card from the first Logan's run for them so I cannot tell you the cost, but @NCFJ will gladly give you a good quote. Man these things are solid and far and away my favorite mod.

I have a interior tire mount that Jerry made to get my tire out from under the truck. Work great but storage is always a concern with family. My spare made it's way to the roof rack until a rear bumper gets added. Hope it helps. Jason's got some good advice for sure as well as the others.

Well he's already said that's a no go for space reasons and I didnt mean to imply a full price offer. It does say OBO. I only know what he will not accept ;) but somewhere between there and asking price could still work out for the right person. Maybe just not Chris. It was just a suggestion to help stretch his dollar
