If you could line it with some sort of thin padding, neoprene or something maybe, and fit a pro DSLR in there, that would be amazing!

They will all get foam rubber padding or actual rubber padding. The sides will likely be felt lined. Still trying to decide on that.

Special thanks to @Dobie for traveling all way down from Fresno to let me pour over his console yesterday  (ok he was in town anyway :P )

Basically Dobie's 2004 console is very different from the 98/99 consoles. Doesn't look like anything crosses over so they will just need to be treated separately. Unfortunately I do NOT know when the console cut off is. Is the 2000/2001/2002/2003 more like the 98/99 or more like the 2004? I need you guys to let me know.

The 2004 has a fairly deep lower bin which has the DVD changer take up more than half of the vertical space. I *could* manufacture just a lid for the remaining space but the useable space will be fairly small and the lid would only be attached to plastic. Anyone with a screwdriver would be able to gain access so its a solution that for me is a non-starter. The best use to make use of the space would be to remove the DVD changer all together. Unfortunately this requires removing both seats to gain access to the screws that hold the console in place. Once you remove the console then it can separate from the DVD changer. All of the DVD parts and plastic would need to be removed in order to utilize that space and expose any possible further attachment points underneath. The Lock box could theoretically be bolted into place from that point and then the console would slide on top of the lock box, similar to how it slide over the DVD changer. I have a pretty clear idea on how to accomplish the design of the lock box for the 2004 style console but I would need to have a truck available to me to be disassembled. Not sure if that opportunity will present itself since most seem to make their trucks their DDs.

The 2004 LC also has an odd double cup holder under the top lid that is locked out of the way. This placement is odd to me and gratuitous since there are already two cupholders at the ready by the shifter. Since the console cupholders are in place you can NOT add one of my APUs to this location. If the cupholder was removed then the APU1: http://absolute-wits-end.com/accessory-panel-unit-5-5x7/ *could fit*. The caveat to this installation is that the edges of the APU would just barely cover the rubber nubs that act as a bumper when you close the lid. Not an issue at all if it covers but something to keep in mind.

I did have the opportunity to make a liner for the upper console so at least I can add that to my inventory. Looks good in Dobie's console ;)

Under that top lid, going into the lower DVD changer area, the APU2: http://absolute-wits-end.com/accessory-panel-unit-5x8-5/
fits perfectly under this. BUT...since there is no air gap, and its just a plastic tray, you can't use the supplied screws or else they would just go into the tray are above. You would need to use the VHB snaps instead: http://absolute-wits-end.com/vhb-adhesive-backed-male-snap-4pk/

Remember, this is for 2004 ONLY!!!! Pics coming soon.

Here are the pics (again, 2004 only). This is what the lower console looks like and what needs to be worked around for the DVD Changer. In that open space is where a lid could technically be installed although it would bring the suck.

Here is the underside of the top lid with the tray still attached. This is the perfect location for the APU2.

Here is the underside of the upper most part of the top lid and the double cupholders. Technically speaking if the cupholders were removed, which Dobie said he never uses, then the APU1 would fit.

Nice, I really like the way that accessory panel sits on the bottom of the middle deck. The liner is a nice touch too, I could really use one of those. Also I'm not sure when the console changed, but I'd guess maybe when the shifter/dash area got the update, so it may be valuable if a 2003 owner chimes in. Seems like those of us without the dvd changer have much more open space for a lock box without modification. Although, seems like we could easily dremel out the fins down there to make maximum use of the space if needed.

Yeah the tabs coming off would be ideal. Still can't figure out what they were for :meh:

I need to get a couple of the liners made and make one for the earlier 100s as well then I'll add those to the site...later :flipoff2:

I could see having both the APU1 and APU2 installed. Then I could separate the good stuff from the junk.

But then would the APU2 have enough space over top of the lockbox for closing?

Well...for the 2004 anyway, yes you would. There is a 1.5" of open space from the bottom of the lid to the top of the DVD changer now. That means anything installed in the APU will clear without issue. For earlier, I don't know yet.

FWIW, my '03 looks exactly like that '04. I suspect the change happened with the 'refresh' and new nav system in 2003.

The APU3 for the 60 Series is actually about 1/4" too wide. Plus the notches don't align. Chad what year is your truck?

So what is the best way to ensure correct dimensions, slope and radius for a form fitted lock box when you don't have a 3D laser scanner? You make a mold. Presenting the LX450 center console.

Ok folks quick update. Made a couple of modifications based on the plaster casting I did. Sometime tomorrow or Wed I will be doing the plaster casting for the LC 80s. Then its the early 60s and early 100s. Here is what the final is looking like. The bosses will be adjusted just a little bit to be sure that these will fit right into place without new hardware. I've ordered the Medeco tumblers as recommended so that I can play around with them. Its likely I will be going that route. I'm looking at getting dual key'd sets because I have an idea for a locking lid for the F.E. Mounts so it would be nice to have the same key for both ;)

Anyway, here is how the final piece will look. This will be going to my metal shop in the next day or two. Anyone that can be without their console for a few days please PM me.

Looks great! I would love one with a tumbler lock for a year 2000 100 Series! Let me know when they are ready!
