Yeah, I agree. There is no reason to lock the top section since there are other ways to get into it. It would never be secure.

Wondering if one couldn't create a simple but tough lock box that lines the OEM lower console and uses the 4 bolts that attach to the body. You'd likely lose the area where if flares out to the sides, but I'd be all for a super stealth box with a lock or combo at the top. The hinge would be a problem with a recessed box so maybe just have the lid have a tongue on one side and the lock on the other, all recessed into the console. Wouldn't be Fort Knox, but you'd have to be pretty motivated. Definitely would prevent a smash-and-grab which is 99% of the risk.
