LC80 later model console was just dropped off. Casting in a few hours ;)

Okie dokie guys, this casting could be for the 100s but I haven't found someone willing to go without their console for a day or two. I understand it's a bit of a pain for the 100s but if I can get access to one for a few days I'll do all the work the remove the console, do the casting, clean up and reassemble. Here is the 80 Series non-LX version. Done yesterday. I got an early 60s console yesterday so I'll be doing that casting today.

Added in a hole for an accessory plug such as USB. iPhone, mini-USB plug. This way if you want to throw in your phone or iPod or whatever you can can at least charge it while its in there. You would need to cut a small matching hole in the plastic of the console but that shouldn't be a big I deal I should hope. ;)

This is with my metal shop now so its all waiting on them. I was warned that they got in a very large job so I've been pushed back a bit so its not going to happen right away. Sorry guys. Its moving forward just not as quick. I have quotes in for dual keyed-alike Medeco tumblers and some single Medeco tumblers. This will be the largest expense for sure. The hinges have been spec'd and sourced. Just need to order and cut when ready.

I'm in for an APU-4 (for the inside of the upper) when they're live on the site. Interested in a lockbox as well... I'd love the combo over the key if that's an option as well to minimize new noisy things in my pocket.

JUST got the pic for the APU shown in the lid. I will be offering a combo lock as well. ;)

Oh and I just got in my Medeco M3 tumblers, both single and dual keyed-alike and both long and short tumbler. I also got in some adhesive lined MicroSuede for the inside lining along with some rust preventing foam rubber floor lining as well. Experimentation has begun. :flipoff2:

Oh the ONLY thing that's missing?

:hmm:

A 99-02 100 Series center console to make a cast from. :(

How hard would it be to remove mine and ship it to you? I don't have an FSM and don't want to destroy my center console (which I'll be apt to do without directions)...but I'd be happy to do it (A/C is out and wife is traveling all summer, so good time to do it) and I'm sure we could work something out. Thoughts?

The 2003-2007 looks cumbersome but not impossible. I could see how to remove the useless DVD changer to really open up some room. But for the these years it means the seats come out to access the screws to allow the center console top to be remove to get access to the inner center console. If I could get one of these for the day I would be happy to do all the work for it. On the earlier years (1998-2002) I don't know because I haven't seen one in forever. But I imagine it's a cross between the 80 and later 100 so not so bad. If you can get it to me there is a free LockBox with whatever extras I'm planning to go with it in it for ya :grinpimp:

Same offer the other vehicles got that sent me their consoles. ;)

Just got the ComboLock in, man this is sucky. I'm sure it works fine but its too tall so it won't be flush with the lid so it will be exposed instead of hidden under a console liner. I'll also have to make a specific cam for it because it doesn't come with a height I need. Its Made in China which blows but its not exactly garbage, just not...well, nice. I need to hunt down other options if combo locks are that important to some of you.

I also got in the hinge that I might be using. Now that I have it here I think I may go up a gauge or two and make it at least 1.2" wide wing instead of 1/4". I experimented with the spot welding a bit by changing up the timing and proximity to edge. I suppose I should do that chisel test but if I'm doing the hinge under the lid then there is no point doing that test.

Any updates on this?

Alright, well if you folks want to see this actually happen I am going to be needing some serious feedback from you all. I don't have a horse in this race since I don't have a 100 Series so I really don't know what the demands are or what is going to work because I don't seal with the 100 Series on a daily basis. There also needs to be some kind of consensus between you early 100 owners on what the final product is going to be. I can see there are a lot of different ways I can go about this.

• Once the inner console is removed, the entire piece is basically 1ft cubed (12" x 12" x 12").
• The hole thing splits in half give you a lower piece which is roughly 4.25" tall and an upper piece which gives you roughly 4" of space to work with.
• The top half funnels inward to an opening of 6" x 9.5". This is the MAXIMUM lid opening period...but likely smaller for the hinge and lock.
• If I make the Lock Box for the bottom half then it's rough dimensions will be: 9.75" x 8" x 4.25". This would keep the 12v plug unmolested and still useable.
• If I make it for just the bottom half then you still get a useable space of 6" x 9.5" x 6.5" under the console lid. So still useable space.
• If I make the Lock Box go to the top of the console box to the small tabs then you will have a Lock box that is roughly 6" x 9.5" x 8". In doing so there are some issues: The 12v plug will be locked inside the box which means either changing its location or just leaving it inside the locked box, the remaining accessible space above the Lock Box lid will be only 1.5" tall. Very little room but maybe that it what is wanted, I don't know. But you also lose some of the side space on the bottom of the console because I will likely be making straight sides.
• I could make tapered sides to better form fit the inside but I feel the cost would scare all of you away.
• How many of you would SERIOUSLY be willing to purchase one of these? Its a pretty big nut to cover on my end to make these.
• What is an ideal price point to hit? I waaaaay under priced the 80s LockBox and now I'm going to be sitting on inventory and I'm still out of pocket even with the GroupBuy.

I would prefer just the bottom half be locked. It would allow for a false bottom to nearly completely conceal the lockbox if desired and you still get some usable center console space for quick access items when security isn't a concern. Sunglasses, camera, snacks, etc. But then again, I can see why some people would just want a larger lockbox and not care about having usable space above it. Tough call.

As far as price point, I'm really not sure. I think 120-150 seems reasonable.

Just my two cents
