To all those interested I have been working on putting a toyota 1HZ into my Canadian HJ60. Here's a little background info:

I bought my 1986 Toyota HJ60 in December 2003 in Toronto with a bad motor and the intention of having the motor rebuilt while at school to have this summer. However, the cost of having the tired 2H rebuilt quickly outweighed its benefits so before long I bought a used 1HZ (thanks to G&S Cruiser Parts) to install myself in the interested of saving some money and building a kick ass cruiser. ;)

Work done so far:

The first weekend was simply ripping apart the front end. The 2H had already been removed by the mechanic who inspected the engine, however the H55F remained in the truck. Basically, I just loosened the fenders, pulled the grill, lights, radiator, a/c condensor, rad support, exhaust, etc. It didn't take long, only one afternoon.

The second weekend was dedicated to dropping out the old H55F and cleaning and sealing the frame. Some sand blasting, grinding a scraping cleaned the front clip up nicely and it was then sealed with Rust Bullet. This was a rough weekend, but I was very pleased with the results.

The third (this past) weekend was the installation. The installation actually went very smoothly, almost too smoothly. The "new" 1HZ and H55F remained together and was carefully lowered into the cruiser. The original H55F crossmember was used to secure the tranny, and locate the 1HZ in the bay. 1HZ mounts were purchased, however they needed to be heavily modified (basically remade) to work in a 60 series application. In the 70 series, the 1HZ sits higher on a frame a few inches narrower than a 60 series. So chanel and angle iron was used to extend the mounts and lower the 1HZ in the 60 frame. Once the mounts were fabricated, there were welded in place and the motor bolted down. The was very happy with the way it turned out. Below is the only pice I have of the motor install, but I can get more detailed shots next weekend when I get back down to the shop.

to be continued.... :D

Lookin' great. Love to see pics of the motor mounts you used. I had to completely fab mine up as well for my swap.

Did you get the PS stuff resolved?

Nice job, keep the pis comming

Nice, I hope to be doing this install in my FJ60 really soon ( anyone want to buy a 2F with a H55F and split cas?) I want diesel so bad! I would love to get a look at those too bad your soo far up north cause I would love to give you a hand on that thing. Once I get my funds in order I will be placing my 1hz order.

Boy - I think i am going with OEM LHD 1HZ lines (both pressure and return). With the engine installed the pump is now right next to the box so these 12" lines will definitely work granted the box has 17mm fittings which i have heard it does. I have had no luck finding a "local" hydraulic shop that offers metric fittings...

Panama - the 1HZ has been a very direct swap into the HJ. The HJ came with the same H55F and 24V power system. When you get you motor try and track down an H55F crossmember to lock down the H55F and locate the 1HZ in the bay for when you fab the mounts. I go to school at Clemson in SC and hope to have the cruiser down there this fall. if you ever make it that far north you can stop by and check it out. there a several Clemson cruiser heads that frequent this board.

I will try and get more pics this weekend....

Tucker - thanks, that  was delicious :D

lookin nice gehn!

you goin to make it back down in time? 3 weeks and counting, right?

hey panama, i'd be interested in the h55f/splitcase and the 2F for that matter. how much/when are you looking for?

oh, and i head to florida a 4-5 times a year to play in ultimate frisbee tournaments, so i'm sure that gehn would let me drive the 60 down, right????

Thats the plan.....we'll see how the wiring goes, otherwise i may be bringing down the '81 Monte Carlo

Sure, You take the 60 to the tournament and I'll take ur 40 to the beach :D

The drive train is in the truck now (its my DD). The H55F trany is 2 yrs old 30k or less on it, the tcase is good i replaced all seals/gaskets and inspected all bearings, I think I changed one. The 2F is a 85 200k runs like a champ never opend, new water pump, some other typical things I had it comp tested when I bought it in 2000 and all 6 cylinders were like 248 ish ( i think). Im not in a hurry to sell it but if you are interested we can work somthing out. It would also be cool for you to test it in the truck. SHoot me a PM

Nice going, Gehn! I'd like to know how your 2H sensors and gauges would work with the 1HZ. Someday it will be my turn.

More Pics...

Well i haven't had a chance to work on it this week but i snapped a few more pics of it toni,ght....

First is a pic of the motor installed, second is the Left mount bracket (bad pic, i know...), and the third is the right mount bracket.....The brackets probably aren't the prettiest things i've ever made but they'll git 'er dun.... ;)

update...

Two weeks and I am due to take this rig south so today i tried to assemble the cruiser as much as possible to uncover any problems....its a good thing i did...

Successes: :)
- Rear Drive Shaft installed
- Tranny and t/c Shifters installed
- Front end reassembled
- Discovered the 2H air box will work with the 1HZ (pretty sure anyway...)
- 2H Throttle linkage "re-worked" to function properly on 1HZ
- Busted brake line replaced

Problems:
1) Radiator - The 2H radiator has a hose coming out of the lower passenger side corner that gets in the way of the 1HZ fan. The easiest option would be to replace it with a radiator that has the ower hose on the opposite side, where there is plenty of room. I am going to try and find one, maybe an fj60 radiator has the lower hose located on the driver's side? Anyone have any suggestions?

2) Clutch fork - Though trannies are the same, bell housings/starter/clutch fork setups are different. The 2H has the clutch fork/slave cyl. on the passenger side, and the 1HZ has it on the driver's side. I am not sure if the 2H slave will owrk or not (ran out of time today), But if i need to i can track down a 70 series slave cyl and then just redo the hydraulics.

3) Front Drive Shaft - As mentioned above, the rear went in fine, however, the front t/c flange is a 6mm rather than a 6.5mm like the others. I will need to try and swap in my old flange. Not a big deal, and I suppose i can always live with 2wd for a little while if necessary...

4) A/C - There seems to be a spot on the 1HZ for an A/C compressor right above the alternator on the passenger side of the motor. The 2H A/C compressor appears to line up on the 1HZ, but the plumping gets in the way.... So it looks like i may not have A/C this fall...It would be nice but it is not criticle, so its at teh bottom on the "to-do" list.

Those are the the big ones for now....i hope to tackle the wiring later this week into the weekend so I am sure that will open a whole new can of worms... of course, I am open to any suggestions regarding the problems above....

PICS: Modified throttle linkage (note galvenized bracket) and a front end shot.

VT, I bought a new rad for a HZ mine truck from a dealership up in the Vancouver area of BC Canada. It really wasnt that expensive.

I'll try and remember how much.

I just thought that it would be nice to have the correct rad for that engine!

lower hose on an FJ60 comes off on the passenger side. Top hose on the driver's side. I had to go to NAPA and mess with all the hoses on the wall until i found ones that fit. I bent stiff wire in the exact shape i needed then took them to the shop for matching. Used large copper for joints between hoses.

when you redo the hydraulics for the clutch, consider going with stainless braided stuff. I went that way instead of dealing with all the hard and soft lines on the oem setup. Much slicker install and I think the hose set me back about $30 iirc and that was with some custom silver soldering to make a funny bend at the master.

what plumbing gets in the way of the a/c compressor? PS, coolant?

-mike

Mike - thanks for the tip, where did you find the braided line? You know of an online source?? We have sh!t around here for cusome hydraulics... Its one of the ports on top of the compressor itself that interferes with the bracket/mount. I may be able to rig something up but I gotta get my more pressing clutch and radiator problems solved first. Oh how about a BJ60 rad? is it the same??

TB - a price a and part number would be AWESOME if you can swing them. I may have to have sheldon pick one up for me and overnight it back this way if i can;t get mine to work...all the canadian dealerships near me speak very little english.... How was mounting it in the 60? were custom brackets made up or did it slide right in?

the bj 60 lower rad hose is on the driver side .

two down, two to go....

I solved two problems today, the radiator and the front drive shaft.

The driveshaft was easy, i just swaped the old t/c flange in and it bolted right up. i now have four-paw :D

The radiator wasn't bad either, I ended up cutting and turning the metal port away from the fan and it gave me about 1.25" of clearence which should be plenty to get a shroud in there. (i can post a pic for anyone curious but I am running out of upload room...) Thanks Daryl, if it still gives me problems i will look into a bj60 rad.

Now, I just need to order up a clutch slave cyl and get that A/C going....

Anyone know of a metric braided line source online?
