To all those interested I have been working on putting a toyota 1HZ into my Canadian HJ60. Here's a little background info:
I bought my 1986 Toyota HJ60 in December 2003 in Toronto with a bad motor and the intention of having the motor rebuilt while at school to have this summer. However, the cost of having the tired 2H rebuilt quickly outweighed its benefits so before long I bought a used 1HZ (thanks to G&S Cruiser Parts) to install myself in the interested of saving some money and building a kick ass cruiser.
Work done so far:
The first weekend was simply ripping apart the front end. The 2H had already been removed by the mechanic who inspected the engine, however the H55F remained in the truck. Basically, I just loosened the fenders, pulled the grill, lights, radiator, a/c condensor, rad support, exhaust, etc. It didn't take long, only one afternoon.
The second weekend was dedicated to dropping out the old H55F and cleaning and sealing the frame. Some sand blasting, grinding a scraping cleaned the front clip up nicely and it was then sealed with Rust Bullet. This was a rough weekend, but I was very pleased with the results.
The third (this past) weekend was the installation. The installation actually went very smoothly, almost too smoothly. The "new" 1HZ and H55F remained together and was carefully lowered into the cruiser. The original H55F crossmember was used to secure the tranny, and locate the 1HZ in the bay. 1HZ mounts were purchased, however they needed to be heavily modified (basically remade) to work in a 60 series application. In the 70 series, the 1HZ sits higher on a frame a few inches narrower than a 60 series. So chanel and angle iron was used to extend the mounts and lower the 1HZ in the 60 frame. Once the mounts were fabricated, there were welded in place and the motor bolted down. The was very happy with the way it turned out. Below is the only pice I have of the motor install, but I can get more detailed shots next weekend when I get back down to the shop.
