Half of my door key broke off in the drivers door. I pulled the cylinder thinking I could take it apart but it doesn't seem to work that way. I tried tapping it out on the table, using picks and no luck. The tumblers are keeping it in there. Am I SOL? If so, can I still get some new locks for my 74 piggie?

How far in is the key? Can you try putting a drop of superglue on a wire to fish it out?

If you know someone with a key extractor you might be able to hook it. Kinda looks like a straigtened fishhook. On second thought, how 'bout straigtening a barbed fishook and hooking it?

Take it to a locksmithand see what they can do. Your other option may be to just replace all or both door cylinders. Depends how many keys you are willing to live with.

ducktapeguy using superglue?:D Thats a good thought, I'll try that first. I dont want to get the glue in the lock though. If that doesnt work, I'll head over to the locksmith. Do you think it would be better to have it out of the truck? BTW its in there a good half inch. It would be easier if it was at the surface. Thanks guys. I would hate to have three keys for my truck:frown:, I have enough to carry around as it is.

I'd drive it over and ask him. Methinks he'll want it out which is not really that hard as compared to newer stuff. If you take it apart you may want to consider taking digital pictures at each step so you know how it goes back together....just a suggestion. BTDT

x2 on the locksmith (a competant one), as far as the tumbler goes, I just bought a new one from toyota for my amby doors 76-80's. They should still have one available.

While certainly not impossible to replace, the cylinder locks in the front doors are SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult than replacing the one in the ambulance doors. FYI only

Unless you can actually see the broken part of the key and it is not in very far *at all*, I don't recommend using superglue. A locksmith I know poured superglue over key blanks and intentionally snapped them off in both car doors after answering a late nite remote emergency call, unlocking the vehicle, and then the driver refused to pay him. He may even have made spare keys for the driver, can't remember.

Bottom line, both door locks were toast.

X3 on removing the locks and going to a quality locksmith. (and paying him)

Thats cold, yea super glue can mess things up if too much is used. Why was the locksmith carrying the stuff anyway:rolleyes:. I think I will head on over there today, Thanks again guys.

Cold, I don't know. If you were called out of a warm bed and had to travel to a remote location, perform the requested task, get the caller out of a difficult situation - and then the fool tried to play you for a fool by laughing in your face, telling you he aint gonna pay you a red cent - what would you do?

You dont carry superglue? I always carry it. Best skin mender I know.

Yeah, if the key is in that far, then you might want to try a different approach.

If you were going to try the superglue, you just have to be really careful and dont' put a whole lot. Just enough barely enough to cover the end of a small wire or welding rod, but not enough to really form a drop. I've used that method to retrieve stuff from blind holes and things like that. Seems like your key shouldn't really be stuck in there too bad, so it shouldn't take much force to bring it back out.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it, then take it to a locksmith.
But around here most charge $45-$50 just to come out and look at it. For that price I think i'd give it a shot, but that's just me. The worse that would happen is you mess up and need to buy new locks, which cost about $45 a set. Also, acetone does a good job of removing superglue.

EDIT: Nevermind, i didn't see the part where you said you'd already taken the cylinder out of the door (although I should've realized when you said you tapped it on the table  . Since it's already out of the truck, you might as well take it in. Who knows, they might not even charge you

I would use solder before I tried Krazy glue, GO TO THE LOCKSMITH!!!

Yea blue77, I guess I'd be a little pissed too. Haven't had time to do anything yet, but Ill keep you posted. Had to stay late lastnight to rig a camera at work. One of our employees attempted to enter the office after hours by preventing the door latch to lock:mad:. No rats yet but it should be interesting.

Well, ducktapeguy wins. I used the gel kind so it wouldn't drip. I tried welding rod a few times but that didn't work. Not enough surface area. I decided to use the broken key, put some gel super glue on the end, and carefully inserted like you do on that game "Operation" and let it sit for a few minutes. The thing pulled right out.:D

Thanks for the help. I never would have thought superglue.

Oh, and we also caught the thief today and fired her. She has been with us for five years.:frown:
