My license plate light was disconnected when I bought the 40. Can I just splice a wire off the rear tail light? The tail lights turn on when I turn on the headlights, as they should. Is that the easist fix? I should mention it has the "Swing...

The FJ60 distributor will drop in to any 2F block; you only need the dished pushrod gallery cover from an FJ60, and the igniter and coil from an FJ60 or a late U.S.-spec FJ40. Your 1980 already has an igniter and coil that will work with the 60...

I'm not familiar with the earlier Toyota vacuum retard distributors, but there is a common problem that can develop with age on the centrifugal advance mechanism, that I noticed on my 79 OEM small cap distributor and the big cap OEM that I...

I’ve been through this whole rigmarole myself over the past while, on my ‘72 (12/71 build). My issue ended up being a bad set of points, but in finally arriving at that diagnosis, I touched all of the other systems you mention. I spent a lot of...

Thank you and I truely love your sentiment because: My father purchased this vehicle new in '72. My mother was delivered to the hospital in it to surprisingly give birth to me a month early early during a trash run during a blizzard in '76 in...

Re: vacuum testing: I used some YT vids to get an idea of what the vacuum gauge is telling me. Apparently you can identify a lot of different conditions based on that reading and how it changes over time / with throttle blips. This one was...

Electronic distributors have a reluctor/star wheel and a magnetic pickup. When a point of a star passes by the pickup magnet it fires the coil. The shaft bearings can fail in both types of dist, along with mechanical advance weights and...

Thanks @RevISK … lo and behold…as maybe the most resistant person in my circle to spend another $2500 or more, I ordered the Terrain Tamer spring kit. I need a better ride. this 40 is stiffer and harder to bounce than any other I have had over...

So, for those who have installed these spring sets….where would you say the greatest amount of muscle is required? I lack much of what I had and while I have done my 40 springs but it was 1976…

Don't mind the sawdust; everything came nice and clean it was just sitting on my buddies garage floor for a few months since I'm not presently located with my rig and had to make time to get up to WA.

HEAT!! I spent a few weeks PBBlasting, Impact Screwdriving... with no luck. Picked up a $49 induction heater at Harbor Fright and after ONE cycle on each capture nut from behind, each screw came out slowly. Couldn't heat from the front, but the...

Something to keep in mind with the impact drivers is the bits that typically come with impact drivers are what I'll call "standard Phillips bits". Toyota uses JIS fasteners, and it would be better to use a JIS bit. (JIS = Japanese Industrial...

Hand impact screwdriver should do it. They require a little finesse to work properly if you're not used to using them. I always try both directions to get it broken loose. Making sure the bit is the proper size and I always kind of preload the...

Absolutely agree with 65swb45. To me drilling and tapping is an absolute last resort. It sounds easy, but in practice drilling through the center of the bolt and maintaining the drill bit's alignment with the bolt is really difficult. It can...

I have been back to daily driving the 40 on the commute to the office. Part because I like it, and part to continue with my hunch on the clutch. The slipping was only happening in the afternoons when it was hot and after being on the 55mph...

I do not think they will clear with stock rims. IMO, this is a better alternative if you're not going SOA. What's your plan in the front if you go to fj60-width in the back. Let me know if you want to take a look at or measure mine. I have...

It is very helpful when you are going uphill or just in some rocks and you stall the engine. Just put it low range and first gear and crank the starter without pressing on the clutch. The starter will turn the engine which will turn the wheels...

Servicing the original starter 28100-60041, 28100-60061 is not very difficult. Finding replacement parts for a complete rebuild is. It’s also not easy on the wallet. For me, I like the original sound of the OEM starter.
