~~~Lenny, I dig how you're always thinking about what ya wanna build next. I do the same thing :doh:
Don't we all? Isn't that the curse of the off-roader? :crybaby:
My buddy Randy put a 2010 Tundra drop-out 3rd member in his latest King of the Hammers buggy. It is the size of a 14 bolt with drop in-drop out ability.
The only limiting factor is gear selection. ARB makes a locker.
I've got one of those axles in my driveway!
what housing did he put that third in? I've actually thought about finding one of these axles... but my front is what really needs changing if i stray away from 80 axles. The only thing that is keeping me from it is the satisfaction of having an 80 buggy. I'm almost tempted to drop tire size to keep the "all yota" platform. 37" stickies?
keep in mind the idea is to stay light, take some stress off axle shafts and ring and pinion. which is going to be my weak link once go with longfields.
I am thinking about building a portal'd axle If i start breaking ring and pinions. If i built the portals it would be with yota diffs or ford 9 to stay light.
I can't wait for Will at ACC to finish up his samurai buggy because it has the suzuki aerio motor in it. 150hp /150tq in a very lightweight package ! twice the hp/tq i have now.
when my engine goes i may go this route or :
ecotech 4cyl
LSx and pop wheelies
one of the reasons i put the Dana 300 in there so my motor choices were less limited.
Wheel it. See what breaks. Upgrade.
Heavy emphasis on the wheeling it part.
I think the lightweight and low power / tq engine offset the stickies in the breakage department. Should be good for a while if you're runnin' V6 diffs with a GOOD setup.
essentially the plan is to wheel it till something breaks, then go from there. I prefer to wheel and build em. in that order. just trying to limit trail repairs in the future.
I will at some point be adding more power so I am prepping for the future.
running early minitruck diffs at the moment.. one of the reasons I am brainstormin'
You need to stay out of 5 year old threads... portals are not the answer and it's been that way for a while. not enough support for them.
Next I suppose you'll be looking for a 4bt to drop in it :lol:
If i was trendy I would build an IFS/IRS buggy...
portal combo'd axles took a plunge in popularity, but i think that was more because of the economy and builders and customers went with way cheaper and easier combos read D60/14bolt to stay wheeling.
Thats why i was sorta surprised when i saw em under TJmark's rig and on Ruff Stuff's website.
you not listening... the 4bt would be too heavy ;p
And too noisy. I feel sorry for anyone having to follow a diesel vehicle on the trail.
Ever get behind rig with engine running rich? Just makes my eyes water thinking about it.
The biggest reason was strength.
Unless it's custom, no portal out there was any beefier than 80 series axles. And well. Even Bobby says don't run his 80 series longs on 40's... so that's the reason portals went the way of the dodo bird. 8.5" rings and pinions do not hold up to 40's either.
I got a full bottle of NO2. Cheap boost till something blows up.
I had a set in my shop for a year or so. The biggest reason I did not use them was the problems with breakage in the portal boxes themselves and lack of parts support. You can find parts...but you are going to pay dearly. Also, the pinions are gawd awful long...
Len,
Are you going to add another squirrel to your engine? Plan on 100% power increase by going with 2 squirrel powered engine?
What is the reservation on going with D60 front axle besides weight? It is a proven design with lots of aftermarket parts support and relatively cheap compared to the other more exotic axles. Do you plan on doing front digs?
For the rear, you could do a Ford 9" axle for lighter weight.
Personally, I like having some unsprung weight. 'specially nice in the front.
If I had my choice, this would be it...
Welcome - AxleTech International Motorsports
They have portals with all new components. Gary Wainwright wheels a 4WS Jeep with these portals and 9" centers. Kingpin, so they attach to any kingpin axle. Buy Spidertrax / Diamond / RuffStuff housing with Kingpin Cs (or add your own sourced Cs), centers, high steer and SHAZAM!!!
Can also have with CTIS for the big ballers with the Benjamins out the ying-yang.
Might add a few more squirrells, you mind supplying the rice charles ? : p
Plan on front digs.'not against D60 by any means . I would have to get bigger tires or shave or buy a shaved housing. I know if i shaved it myself it would f'n leak. not skill, just my luck .'..'so thats what started the thought process . Higher strength and higher clearance.
I would just use the portal boxes. Mog diffs are 110'lbs by themselves ...
You don't have any weight sir! ...and the 4bt will have the torq fo' sure!
In my opinion the 9 incher would be the best
Watch it Charles! ...last year I rode w/ Roger and the ride on his 40 was awesome!:grinpimp:
