What is your reasoning for going with an OEM 1HD-T turbo? Turbo tech has changed a lot since 1990, I would at least look into a better OEM option like a hybrid HD-FTE/supra turbo. Lots of options that will improve performance and driveability.

Ditto.
There's better options, and probably a lot less dollars than OEM.
The OEM turbo uses 30 year old tech, things have changed a lot with some strong product development for these engines in the last 5yrs or so

Bumping this thread since it is still ongoing.

As mentioned I sold a 70-series to the owner of these two trucks and I have been working on that for some time.

In the meantime one of the HDJ81's has been getting some work done to it.

-dropped pan and did BEB
-injectors rebuilt
-x2 new batteries
-new coolant and oil

The turbo (or more to the point a good 2nd hand one) is out for rebuild right now. Nothing was really found when the pan was dropped as far as chunks or damage. The engine turns over by hand easily. All the busted turbo parts are accounted for so it doesn't look like much if anything went into the engine. Once the turbo is back we are going to fire it up.

Whole bunch of parts going into it at the same time as the turbo. Mostly engine parts but we will also go through the knuckles and brakes. Once it is back on the road we will take it to a local transmission shop I like to use and have the H151 rebuilt including new synchros and a new Terrain Tamer HD clutch.

Basically we are just doing some major baselining of the truck and putting it back on the road. Fixing some other little things here and there as well to make it a good user and DD. The owner will then take the truck and use it while I do a full refurbish on his other 81 he plans to keep. Once I am done with that he will be selling this one.

Cheers

The first 81 lives again!

Those of you who commented that the engine may not be screwed from the blown turbo were correct. We fired it up last night for the first time since it came to us. It fired up easily once it was primed. There was a ton of oil in the exhaust, got a lot of that burned out on a drive last night.

Today I am putting the headlights and grill back in it and some other small things. I gave it a good wash and steam as well.

Tomorrow a good long drive into the mountains. 1st and 2nd in the trans is bad so the trans will be coming out.

Really, a lot has been going on with these two HDJ81s I just haven’t been good at keeping the build thread going.

Pretty much been just keeping this one up to date.

This is the diff locked 81 though. It just got @Delta VS front and rear bumpers as well as their gear rack. In addition a Warn Zeon 10-S Platinum went in with Factor55 goodies. It is down here to get the bumpers fitted and a few other things such as the H151 rebuilt with a Terrain Tamer 5th gear upgrade kit too.

Cheers

The other HDJ81 I have been picking away at as time allows. It is an LSD rear 81.

Had the H151 in it rebuilt and fitted a Terrain Tamer performance clutch at the same time.

I just installed OME heavies all around, fitted @Delta VS radius arms and rear Panhard bracket, rebuilt the steering, rebuilt the knuckles and rebuilt the brakes all around fitting some reman Toyota calipers. Waiting on a few parts so I can put new bushes in all the rear control arms and rebuild the front and rear sway bars. I also just installed new windows runs and inner/outer window seals plus serviced the regulators. Power windows are working great now.

I just fitted some Trekboxx drawers in the back. Got a @Delta VS front bumper to fit to it and a Front Runner roof rack. Got a bunch of little things to do as well but the Cruiser is really starting to come around. Hood is getting painted black to deal with the clear coat rash. Most of the rest of the paint on the truck is good.

Hey...wasn't familiar with Delta. Nice resource!!!! I'm shopping for an 80 to do an LS swap these days.
Bought my Patrol after reading some of your comments about them....So thanks on that. It's a beast.

More on the LSD rear 81.

Not all but a lot of the mechanical repairs and upgrades out of the way on this build I am moving into other work.

Fixing the A/C right now, got that issue narrowed down. Pulling the ugly steering wheel and putting and OEM back on it. Going through wiring in dash and engine bay, remove old junk, repair and clean up as needed. Mount pillar pod gauges for EGT and boost. Install new ebrake handle. Got a new drivers seat cushion coming so will be refreshing the drivers seat soon. Also got a new trans shift console in route since I will be moving the EGT gauge and there is a huge hole in it.

Um what else!? Pull the ARB bar and mount the Delta. Need to play with the winch on the truck now and see if I can fix it. Mount up Front Runner roof rack.

Besides having new SS exhaust put in and getting the hood painted this is most of what is left to do on the truck.

Cheers

Where did you get the pillar pods from? I tried 4x4 Concepts but they wouldn’t sell to Canada.

Little something special in here...

It was bought for the diff locked 81 but the owner has decided to put it in another Cruiser I am building for him.

Putting that in the diff locked 81 along with a Terrain Tamer H151 rebuild kit and the 5th gear upgrade.

Cheers

Good looking rig, I noticed the catch can, does the engine have a problem, worn rings or valve gear, or just some bling?

regards

Dave

This one not sure, perhaps bling. It was on it when the truck came to me.

I will be installing an HPD catch can. I am a big fan of catch cans but not all are created equal. Even on a healthy engine there will be some oil in the intake, I would rather there is none.

Cheers

Whats the 5th gear change from Terrain Tamer a different ratio ?
