Time to part with my 1978 FJ40. Bought almost 2 years ago to the day. Has been sitting in the garage collecting dust since winter for the most part and it's time for it to go to someone that has the time to enjoy her. She still starts up every time no matter how long she has been sitting (been about 2 months now before today and she started on the first try when I pulled her out of the garage to take a few pictures). Below are links to the build thread from the previous owner and a thread I started about what has been done since I've acquired her. Have added gas struts for the lift gate, new felt for the windows, replaced the fuel lines under along the frame (both rubber and stainless steel), and installed the lower dash pads in addition to removing the spare tire carrier (still being sold with the truck, just not currently mounted) since I last updated the thread.

If only this was three years from now and my daughter was 16!...The deal is that my next car is going to be a Landcruiser and my current daily driver is going to her...my wife says that I will be the only one with a car in the upstate NY area that can top out at 55mph...I told her that I would also be the HAPPIEST 55 mph driver on the road as well! :steer:

Reminds me of when I bought my 74 FJ55. Was living in San Diego at the time and flew into Fargo, ND to pick her up and drive her back over Memorial Day weekend (this was back in '98). Hit Montana and there was no speed limit, believe I got her to 70 for a little (she was loud). Needless to say I don't remember passing anyone for the entire 2000 mile trip. Ah, good times.

40

Still available?

Still For Sale

The 78 FJ40 is still for sale. Send me a PM or email me at LilRdWgnFJ55@gmail.com if you are interested. Some people have contacted me recently and resurrected this thread. If nothing pans out I'll start pushing for a sale a little harder, probably finally put her up on Craigslist. Would much rather have her go to a Cruiserhead, of course.

wish you were looking for a built FJ62.

Bedford is only a couple of hours from me.

GLWS !!

Although I am sorely tempted to take the trade I have to pass (even though this is the first that made me think twice). Barely driving my secondary vehicle as it is and have taken the tags off the 40 some time ago, just not practical for me. Good luck with your sale though and if you find someone to buy your nice 62 maybe we can work something out on the 40.

So is this daily drivable? Not too far from VA. Thx

As it sits it is daily drivable. The water pump leaks (poor install by me) and the rear main is leaking. They didn't stop me from driving it (barely losing any coolant or oil, only had to add minimal amounts) and enjoying it while I could. If you haven't already check out the links in the first post and some of the earlier posts and hopefully they will answer many of your questions. If you have more feel free to post them here, shot me a PM or an email (in one of the recent posts).

Glad to see some interest on activity on my 40 again. Have been procrastinating about reviving this thread and possibly posting on Craigslist if it doesn't move soon (I really don't want to deal with Craigslist). This is a good Cruiser that needs to be used and not left to rot with me.

I have gotten to the point over the past year where the 40 (or any truck with a clutch for that matter) is very difficult for me to drive. My left knee is going again (ACL has gone bad again and missing my medial meniscus for those that know about these things) and the doctors don't feel like anything can be done until a knee replacement (10-15 years from now at my age). At this time I'm still able operate the clutch in the MR2 (has to do with the angle) but afraid that over the next few years that's going to be an issue also.

Enough of my sob story, I have been sitting on this 40 long enough. Someone make a an offer and she can be yours. I have a price in my head and if an offer comes in over that she's gone (if a bunch come in around the same time of course I'm going to take the best one ;)).

Will gladly answer any questions about the 40 and take any pictures requested. But please, read through this thread and check out the links in the first post before asking questions, I believe most issues/concerns are addressed there. I'm not always the quickest to reply so please be patient with me but I will answer any inquiries, PMs, or emails when I have an opportunity.

Thanks for all the interest and looking forward to getting a good 40 to someone that can fully enjoy her.

Unfortunately I'm out of the hunt until late March when I have enough $$ to get another 40 (Dave Ramsey plan doesn't allow for loans :-)).

However, I've talked with this owner and had several email correspondence and he is a 100% straight shooter. This rig is worth the asking price, just read the build thread. If its still available in March, its mine. My $0.02.
Mike

Still for sale, started her up a couple of weeks ago to clean out the garage and she hit on the first try.
