not an issue
hook one end
stand on that end and use your heel to work the ring out and down.
once the last bit snaps then add air slowly.
make sure you keep an eye on the ring as the tire inflates
(i have never had an issue but just to be cautious)
then once you have the proper amount of air in take one more look see at the gap.

i usually use a rubber mallet and hit the ring as the air is going in to make sure the ring seats properly but i am not sure if this is good practice or not.

take a look at the troopie build and you will see my step by step installation technique...

To get the lock ring back in place, just start one end of it, get a few inches in and then step on the rest of it with you in some sturdy boots. Keep one foot on the already started section and use your other foot to advance the portion of the ring in the rim. Thats what I did and it worked well, the bead set right up very quickly, literally 20 seconds to put the ring back in.

Hi all,
Any tips on putting the lock ring back in place? I've basically wasted an entire day trying to do a single tire here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Abe

Thanks guys,
I've managed to do three of them now, so that is progress. The tire bead was basiacally getting in the way of getting the ring seated. So far thow, I don't seem to be able to do it by myself or easily. I have to rest te whole wheel on a second rim, to help keep the bead in the right place, and then I have to get ,y wife to push down on them tire itself in the area I'm seating at the moment.

Doesn't seem helpful if I'm ever out by myself, but I'll keep working on the technique...
Thanks
Abe

Someone (maybe me) needs to film the process. I've only done it a few times though.

hummm

maybe you need to gain a couple pounds?

take a vid of how you are attempting it and let us give advice.

did you take a look at the troopie build thread on split rims?

I use a tyre-lever as well as the heals of my boots:

Decent Rosco?

They're butchers!

They bash wildly (without any proper system of working their way around the rim) and without anything soft on the head of the mallet/hammer.

I agree they are butchers. The vid shows the worst way to do it and still get it together. One of my rings has been damaged from just such a hack job. Lots of dents and damage to the ring and rim.
Wearing a good pair of boots, just stand on the tire while you put the ring on so the lip of the tire is out of way! Use your other foot to work the ring down onto the ring. Simple stuff really.

up to 1:36 the vid was acceptable ...
after that ...

and don't walk away for a coffee while filling the tire with air. pay attention to what you are doing.

X3

I have never used anything other than the heal of my boot

Ha ha!

A damaged/rusty or poorly-designed (read non-Toyota) split-rim wheel and/or a stupid person can certainly result in maiming or death (and using some sort of cage/chain protection would always be considered good advice) ..... but did they really have to doctor the video by using explosives and detonators (or filling the tyre with large amounts of powder to create that effect) to get their message across?

PS. Thanks for posting Wayne. I see Branick Industries (who made the video) is neither Canadian nor Kiwi anyway. It's a USA company :D.
